My wife has a 01 Hyndia sante fe 4x4 we were coming home from work the other day, I had the cruise set at 70mph and all of a sudden it acted like it went in to nutreul. Didnt make a noise didnt bang or anything just went out of gear. Checked all the fluids the looked clean and did not smell burnt, nothing broke or hanging underneath the car. The only gear it will go in is park. It will not shift when its in 4x4 either. Mech said over the phone that it was the tranny and it would run $1350. What do yall think?

It's a possibility. I'm not sure if your vehicle is set up like most "true" 4x4 with a transfer case. If the transfer case is in neutral than the vehicle won't move even in gear. The only way to find out is to drain, drop the pan, and see if anything bad is there.

It has a one and two gear to the side to shift into for the 4x4. And its not not the regular gears. It has p r n d then to the side you shift it into one and two.

I would have a question to the mechanic as to why he would qoute a transmission to me if there is nothing burnt up and i would also ask for a second opinion, only because alot of the vehicles are electronic shift now a days and i cant see it not having any gears whatsoever, just my 2cents worth

why don't you slide underneath the truck and pull the drain plug to inspect the oil. Make sure the oil is not burnt and there is no metal on the magnet.

I doubt you have internal gear or bearing failure since there was not odd noise.

if this is the same tranny im thinking about, all the clutches will be fine but, the front pump will be destroyed due to a snap ring that holds a clutch pack in, the ring breaks and gets chewed up into the front pump breaking the gear and trashing the TC.

before my accident I was a auto mechanic and I seen a couple of those but very few there was a updated snap ring kit that would keep that from going bad again I don't know if it's still out there anymore iv been away from the tranny bussiness to long.
