Ok, I think I got a decent deal at Bass Pro. I picked up the last 11ft. ocean master. Since it was last one they marked it down.119.00 to 68.00. Bass pro in Missouri says they get some saltwater stuff by mistake so they like gettin rid of it I guess. Now. I wiil be doing mostly surf fishing with a poppin cork. Tell me what line 10,12,20 and what size leader should go with it. I kinda don't want to use braid line unless you convince me to.

An 11 foot ocean master as a poppin cork setup?
Ummm..
Maybe a bait rig.. Line depends on the reel..

What Green Water is trying to say is that that's a bit much rod to be throwing little poppin' cork setups. It's designed for a bit bigger game than that. Let us know what kind of reel you have on it and we can give you a nudge in a little better direction.

Well I know that I won't be using a baitcaster reel. I will use an open face spinning reel holding up to 30lb line. Basically, the only thing I'm askin is should the main line be bigger or smaller than the leader. I'm little confused on that. If you say I need to use a 7ft. rod for poppin cork then ok. I just wanna know the main line to leader ratio for specks, reds, and sharks.

Use the ocean master for reds and sharks..
30 pound line is too big, really cuts down on your casting distance. Now a 30-50 pound shock leader attached to 15 pound main line would be perfect. If you want to go with 20 that's fine too but in my experience 25 pound mono is about MAX what you want on a spinning reel.
and the 7 footer for a Poppin Cork setup. Throw on some 12 pound line so you can get some power casts in.
Wooo!

Thx peeps. Good info. Well now I did some digging and somewhere along my travels I do have a conventional reel. It is PENN PEER #309. Is this reel supposed to have a guide for the line as you spool it on. You know the thing that makes the line go back and forth so the line goes on level. I believe they might call it a worm gear, not sure. They don't seem to be worth much on EBAY. Any input appreciated.

Yea, the 11 footer will make a good surf/pier/jetty pole. The advantage of it is that you can cast it much farther. I agree with the 20lb to a heavier mono topshot, but i'd go at least 60lb for it. 3 ounce surf weight may not seem like much weight, but when your winging the hell out of it to get into the 3rd gut, 20-30 lb test can snap like overdone spaghetti after a couple casts. So 80% of the line is the 20lb test with the top 20% being 60lb or heavier. Use a really good uni to uni knot to join the lines and at the end use a black wire leader, 3 ounce surf weight, anywhere from 5/0 to 7/0 hooks. Use cut mullet and if you're lucky you can catch large redfish. You will definitely catch one or all of the following: sharks, hardhead catfish (which are inedible and release toxins when they fin you, which is really painful), whiting (large ones are good eating), stingrays, many more. Use peeled shrimp and fishbites with 4/0 hooks when the surf is calm and you can catch all the above with the added possibility of sand trout and the true jewel of the surf, Pompano, which is like the finest eating fish you'll ever have. Just be prepared to rebait often and remove lots of hardheads and whiting from your line. Squid is cheap and stays on the hook, but this fish you catch are no good. You will not catch speckled trout fishing this way. You can use this same set up for the piers and jetties, but just be prepared to lose a crapload of terminal tackle.
Far better surf fishermen than me use the larger conventional penn and diawa reels for this, but I just can't cast them as well as say a 70 or 80 series spinner, so I don't bother with them. But again, really good surfcasters can cast twice as far as me with conventionals. It's kind of like an art form with a steep learning curve. Penns are built like tanks and they won't fail on you, though. Some of the older ones don't have a line guide so you have to feed the line onto the reel with your thumb, even while fighting a fish, maybe that's the case with the one you have. Sometimes people remove the line guide themselves to aid in casting distance. Good luck with that if you wanto to go that route.
Last thing, don't try to swim out to the third sandbar unless you can hang with Michael Phelps in the 200 free. When the water gets to your solar plexus, it's time make your best cast and head back to shallower water. Undertows and rip currents can be deceptively strong and people drown in the surf each year while trying to swim to or from the third bar. So be careful, and have fun.

A Penn Peer 309 would be plenty of reel. The mechanism that loads the line on the reel is called a Levelwind and you do not need it. When reeling in, use your thumb to wind the line to one side evenly and then release while still winding and the line will lay where it should until it centers. The repeat to the opposite side. Repeat this action until the line is reeled in.

Guys, I was at Seawolf early friday morning looking to catch some trout but they were somewhere else hmmm. Just about everyone else fishn from the rocks were pulling up oversized reds and 3-6ft blacktips. I sat on the picnic table sad but very entertained watching all the action. I couldnt join in cuz I only had trout rod n arties bang. So I decided to purchase a r n reel that would be ideal for slot or bull reds and maybe a 4ft shark. I have never fished for anything other than specs n flounder so can anyone provide info on a decent setup ? I currently use Allstar shrimptail specials n Classics with Citica Reel but need something with the clicker to throw freshdead bait from the bank or pier. Any help would truly be appreciated. flehan

Im a strong believer in Shimano but ive heard that they dont really compare when it comes to bigger models. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? ive read that the daiwa sha/30 or penn 525 is probaly best for me and got great castin distance?? Is there a Shimano that in that size range that performs the same or better? I know this is alot of qstns but Im trying to get the right setup. I found a shimano TR2000 for a good price 60 bucks but not sure if that reel is sufficient????

The Sealine SHV and SHA are nice reels!
You could also go with a new Avet Mag.. For a few bones more..
Shimano aren't the best casters per say nor the most popular. Their Spinning and Baitcasters are top notch but they don't offer anything for surf fishermen.
Wooo!

a few bucks more? the penn 309 is 70 bucks and most good avet reels are 2 or 300 bucks. use 30 lb mono but stay away from the bright green due to kind fish running into it. buy a cheap 20 dollar spinner rod and reel and a small 2/0 circle hook and throw small piecs of shrimp and catch small sand trout and piggys and get a decent size hook on the penn reel and hook up the piggys and trout and cast out and you can get good size reds gaftop and whatever is around really. you will be good to go with a good day of fishin.
