I have heard that licenses are going up this September. I wonder if the amount of money gathered from these fees that ACTUALLY GOES to TPWD is going up?

Gee...imagine that...
An increase? Well I'm so surprized. cool

It pretty much goes into the general fund now anyways doesn't it?

What little of the increase that is going to TPWD will probably be used to pay for the "law enforcement" side of their operation, not for things that will actually improve the fishing in the state (like stocking more fish, etc). I was surprised when I first looked at the stocking records for the lakes in Lubbock in the 1960s through mid-1990s, they used to do a much better job of stocking a wide variety of fish here -- including regular bass stockings in just about every playa lake -- but since the mid-1990s the stockings have just been fingerling channel catfish for the most part. And in 2008 we didn't even get a rainbow trout stocking here for the first time in many years, even though the last license price increase was supposed to include the trout stamp that used to be required.

As a result of the poor stockings here, most of the time when you go fishing you won't catch anything, but at least half the time there will be a game warden there to check your license to make sure you are paying for the privilege of mediocre fishing. It'd be nice if they'd place at least as much emphasis on stocking fish as they do on the law enforcement side of things. I don't mind the frequent license checks so much, but it would be nice if TPWD here was concerned with more than just that.

I also wouldn't mind the license price increase if they were still stocking the lakes here like they were before the mid-1990s. However, many of us here would like to catch something other than the little channel catfish they (mostly) stock, and not all of us have the time or money to go to Lake Alan Henry every time we want to fish for bass. So, I don't think I will renew my license this year, I have a couple of private lakes I can go to and have better results. No point in paying more for fishing that just continues to get worse every year. I think TPWD is going to lose more money than they stand to gain with these price increases.

Still, a super combo is the cheapest form of year long entertainment

From time to time they have people taking on the water surveys, how far did you drive, how often, how much would you spend. I alway ssy, I do not think I will be able to afford to come back, it is too costly.

It's nothing new. It's been going up every year since I started fishing about 15 years ago.

Combo Fishing and Hunting will be going from $1000 to $1800 on Sept. 1. If you are thinking about getting it. You better get it now. My son and I got ours 3 years ago. I should have got them when they were $500 a piece.

I called TPWD today and they said that as long as they receive your app before Aug 31, you can still get a lifetime combo for $1000. I sent mine today. I'm only 25 so at the new price, it will pay for itself before I'm 40.
