Hi, i am totally new to saltwater, i am wanting to purchase a multi purpose setup. Am interested in trouts, reds, bull reds, small sharks (2-3 feet).

From what i have read on this forum a lot of people fish with shimano curados and about 7 ft medium action rod.

1) what brand (brands) are recommended for rod?
2) Is the shimano curado 300 series capable of catching the small sharks / bull reds? If i put 18lb test line, is that enough line (yards)?
3) what about pen 4000 series spin caster?
4)Does just about everyone use braided line with monofilament (or flurocarbon) leader?

I really have no idea what I am doing. Anything else I should know?? smile

THANK YOU !!!!!!

I went wading last weekend and took a zepco 404 with 12lb tst and did just fine on the shark. Caught about thirty of them. Im sure that anything better than a zebco should hold up.

What type of reel are you planning on using baitcast, spining, etc...? You really can't go wrong with Penn spinning reels and there are some pretty good combo rigs at Bass Pro or Cabellas. if baitcaster is your choice really any of the medium heavy to heavy combos will work as long as you clean them each time after salt water use, specific reels are really a personal choice. Line is the bigger issue in my opinion.

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!
