After the initial purchase is made, how much does it cost to own, maintain, and operate a boat (factoring in insurance, taxes, gas, maintenance, etc.)? Obviously it depends on the boat, but let's say I'm talking about a boat that costs about $8,000 to $15,000.

BOAT =

Bring
On
Another
Thousand

If you have to store it somewhere and can't work on it yourself it can get expensive.

just guessing but I probably spend about 100-150 a month over the course of a year, this is all inclusive, less fuel and oil as they vary ALOT.

Mine is $1200/year for storage and insurance. I've never added up gas and oil but at least another $100-$200/month for me on those. Then there's costs for routine maintenance like lower unit oil, impellor and plugs/tune-up. If you do those yourself, its not too expensive. If you have it done expect to pay another several hundred/year plus any repairs that WILL pop up from time to time.

As others say it really depends on your situation. I can store mine at my house and do all of the maintence myself. Mine costs me a couple of hundred a year for insurance, probably $200 a year on maintence stuff, and another couple of hundred for add ons every year. I refuse to add up how much I spend on gas and 2 cycle oil but my fishing buddies usually pay for that.

If you have to pay to store your boat and have to pay to get it worked on it can be VERY expensive. Not to mention any repairs. As said above.

BRING ON ANOTHER THOUSAND!!

Can you work on one yourself for routine stuff like minor electrical, bilge pumps, impellers, etc. and can you store it at your house? If YES, then it will not cost you that much at all. Insurance is optional for boats in Texas - although I recommend you get it. Of course, gas and oil will depend on how much you use the boat.

Don't forget trailer tires, trailer lights, lower unit maintenance, constant little things that break, upgrading electronics, trolling motor batteries, cranking batteries, prop rebuilds, upholstery repairs, carpet repairs.

For me, fuel is by far the most expensive thing.

Like others have said, if your handy you can save some $$ but there's a lot more to owning/operating a boat than just making payments.

I've always had a boat and will not be with out one but they are expensive toys.

If you want it don't worry about it. If you are worrying about it don't get it. I don't even think about what I spend a month, it's a bunch. Last week put a Hamby on,,,,another 450.00.
