 Replacing emergency brake

How difficult is it to replace the emergency brakes on a 2002 Chevy Silverado? I took the truck in for inspection today and they passed it although my emergency brake doesn't hold properly. I tried it on the boat ramp and it's pretty much useless. I can change regular brakes with no problem so I was wondering how much more is involved to do the emergency brake. What all has to come off beside the rear wheels? Also, if anyone has had theirs done at a shop, what sort of cost would I be looking at? Still trying to decide if I want to do it myself or pay.

you have an adjustment in them sounds like you have disc brakes well disc over drum lay under the truck (with it off) have some one push the e brake and find the cable there should be a adjustment in itjust make it tighter no too tight or when your on the ramp it could pop loose so make the pedal tight and you will be good if that doo not work let me know
if work is so easy then im going fishin

Those suburbans had a very badly designed emergency brake. There was a good thread on this on TFF some time ago but have not found it. There is a new part for those emergency brakes. Dont think they called it a recall.

There was a good thread here on TFF about a year back but Ive gone back and looked through all my posts. Its gone. I recall there was talk about a redesigned part (probably standard if you buy the parts today). Also a lot of complaints about the design period. Probably get a lot of info off general GM forums as well.

Thanks, I will check it out this weekend and have the wife push the pedal down to see if I can adjust it. If it doesn't adjust, I will just take it apart and replace the assembly.

You will probably have to replace the rear rotors. The parking brake is a drum brake inside the hat of the rear rotors. The problem is, if you don't use your parking brake frequently the shoe gets out of line and then wears a groove into the drum surface.
Its hard to explain but because of the groove, you can't get the rotor over the parking brake shoe and then have enough adjustment to get the parking brake to hold. I was never able to find anyone that could turn the inside of the rotor. New rotors were only about $35 each if I recall.
I ended up replacing the parking brake shoes, rotors and new pads since I got new rotors. Once you fix it just remember to set your parking brake every night. It recenters the shoe in the drum and will greatly lessen the chance this will happen again.

They do hav disc brakes all the waya round but the parking brake is a separate unit. From the reports above, it looks like a drum type brake on the inside of the rear rotor (disc rotor). I'll have to tear it apart to see.

is same unit the drum is the inside of the disc and they dont come off easy well they can be a pain hit the drum part of the disc with a hammer not the disc but the drum all the way around and it should come off
if work is so easy then im going fishin

i worked for a gm dealer for 7 years..heres the deal from mid 99 till mid 06they had a 1 piece e-brake on the rear disc the piece that holds the shoe to the backing plate was not large enough and let the shoe pivot forward wearing it to metal in 03 gm came up with a new designed retainer it works great..the bolts on the caliper have lock tight on them and are hard as he11 to get loose once the caliper is loose the drum can be a chore but trust me you can get it off persistance is the key..as far as the large groove the shoe made install the rotor on the axle backwards that will hold it take a grinding bit put it in a drill and grind the drum lip flush KEEP IN MIND THIS IS AN E-BRAKE THE VEHICLE WILL NOT BE MOVEING WHEN YOU APPLY IT SO YOU DONT NEED A SMOOTH SURFACE..just a surface that will make contact...be carefull when pulling the shoe the adjuster will fall out..good luck

Thanks for the advice and it sounds like I might have to bite the bullet and take it in for repair. I thought it might be any easy fix but would hate to start on it and find out I can't get this thing apart, plus I'm a little skeptical when it comes to grinding on things. Any idea what a dealership would charge to repair (hours labor)?

I have a 2001 Tahoe that had the same problem. Luckily, ours went bad at about 30K miles and was replaced under warranty. No problem since.
