I'm looking at the Pete Maina signature series muskie rods and the walleye angler signature series rods in the 9' to 12' range for long distance casting of 1oz. to 2oz. spoons with an Ambassadeur C4 reel and berkley big game 15lb test line to be used on lake side of Rayburn damn while they're dumping water and creating current. One really needs to get out there a long way to get in the lake current where the fish are. Saw it done 10 years ago there. they were useing 6500 C3's.
Can anyone tell me if thats a good combo for bank striper action? I figure the C4 reel with 6.3:1 ratio can pull double duty on the discharge side of damn keeping up with current, seeing as you have to cast a slab slightly up stream and keep it off bottom-guranteed hangup.(as well as keep your line clear of other fisherman).
I bought a 15' saltwater surf rod with spinning reel in 245yards of 15# line size but that #!%@ thing is just to heavy and thick for casting like that.

St. Croix makes some really nice surf rods in a 9 - 10 foot range. It takes someone very strong with great timing to cast a 15 foot rod. If you want to learn to use that rod -- practice, practice, practice. Also, it's easier with a big old spinning reel -- just watch your finger or the line will really bite you.

A 15 foot rod prob needs at least 3 to 5 oz. to cast well -- if it's lighter than that it might just be too wishy-washy, too limp to get any real distance -- unless you can really load it up, and time your cast just so.

For many years (and many years ago) the standard surf rod on north-east shores was a 9 foot, medium action. Longer, and heavier, rods were used down on the outer banks for big redfish (AKA Channel Bass), and BIG Bluefish (long casts needed).

I don't know if any of this is helpful, it's just some information I gleaned over the years.

Want to lighten up on the spinning rods? Look at the 12' salmon rods. I can get more distance with lighter lures using a spinning outfit and the salmon rods have enough backbone to get the job done. With a big striper, you're going to have to go down river with it anyway.

Cabelas has a Shimano(Cennan)--I'll see if I can find it--that I was looking at online. They have a 10fter but it is slow action so I don't know if that is something you would want. It is on clearance for $129(normally $200). They also have a 9fter fast action/Med pwr for the same price--hey here is the link
