there's plenty of fish at hubbard and lavon- no need to head east unless you are going to fork

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Depends on what you fish for. Leave those green trashies alone and go for some real fish, there are more than plenty. Both lakes are LOADED with monster cats.

I think you are just battling old lakes with lots of water fluctuation....just makes it hard to catch fish sometimes.

I am no expert on Lavon, but Hubbard is about as good a fishery as many other Texas lakes out there. Lake Fork and Texoma are kinda the "cream of the crop" when it comes to great fisheries close to DFW, and TPWD understands that. The demand for those lakes validates there stocking and management.

Ray Hubbard is a great fishery. I make more than half of my living as a full time guide on that lake. The sand bass fishing is unbelievable for numbers of fish. The size are respectable as well. Not huge, like the Tawakoni sandies, but very good overall. Also, with the development of the area (Bass Pro Shops, Hilton Bella Harbor, The Harbor, and lots of trendy restaurants), TPWD had "Up'd" the stocking rate for hybrid striper in Lake Ray Hubbard. The demand and fishing pressure has increased, so they are working toward an even better fishery. I really feel that within the next ten years Hubbard will be a premier hybrid fishery.

Hubbard also has several black bass in the Share a Lunker program! There is a beautiful river and flat system up North on that lake. Grass, bull rush, lillies.....great habitat. And if you look hard enough, you can find some of that on the South side as well.

Keep fishing them and learn as much as you can each trip. Some days are better than others, but hopefully in time you will be able to wear them out on either lake!

Could be gilligan is a bankfisher. If so he would be correct in his frustration fishing the two lakes. Access is difficult at best, and the places available usually leave you casting into a shallow gradual sloping bank with no structure...a virtual barren plain... as in Lavon, or a garbage heaped - line snaring - arse busting rip-rap pile next to a busy highway as in Ray Hubbard. Sure, you can catch fish there...sometimes...........but it's awful easy to not catch fish there also.

A boat makes a huge difference in your capabilities on either of the two.

Or so it seems to me.
hmmm

My PB is from Ray Hubbard 6.5 lbs back in 1987.. From the bank in Robertson Park. I have not caught near that size since I have been fishing out of a boat. I am almost convinced that Ray hubbard has very few Black Bass and an over abundance of crazies and sandies....

Q: Does Lavon Lake release water to keep Lake Ray Hubbard full?

A: No. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers only releases water from Lavon Lake for flood control purposes.

Lavon drops pretty fast on its own and from water consumption, I would hate to see how low it could get to keep Hubbard full. But none the less, it could use a few more stockings of Florida Bass. Stripers have been getting their fair share of stockings for the last sveral years

I agree Ray Hubbard is a great fishery. It has a variety of good fishing... It is a big lake and lots of options. The quality of Bass has really surprised me.

If you want to read about the effect that water-usage can have on a lake, take a look at this story about Benbrook Lake:

Ray Hubbard is a constant level lake. Well, they (City of Dallas) let it fluctuate only about a foot or so max. So that helps the fishing greatly imo. The black gumbo clay soil makes for very little water loss through seepage. It's the perfect bottom type for a reservoir.

The traffic pressure is getting heavy the last 5-10 years, with most of the increase coming from the wakeboarding/jetskiing yayhoo crowd. This weekend will be an absolute madhouse, but fun to watch. They could do a girls gone wild on Ray Hubbard on a holiday weekend! Ahem, well, as I was saying, the sandbass and hybrid fishing is really quite good once you learn to deal with the boat traffic by going early and staying away from the main boat channels.

As for TPWD, they are sensitive to usage trends, and giving citizens the most bang for the buck, in other words, they pay a lot of attention to the most popular lakes, like Hubbard. So no, I think they do pretty well with Hubbard.

I'm not so certain the 2005 lake survey for Joe Pool states it lacks forage and needs restocking of shad. Here it is 2009 and it still has no record of shad stocking. I also believe it has at least 1 share lunker but no record of share lunker stocking which is supposed to happen with some of the hatch.

Everything for the trophy lakes like Fork. Then the metroplex lakes are to Fork ... ah, i better not type that.
