Hook: Tiemco 100 #10-16 or equivalent Thorax; Peacock herl Body: Black 2mm closed cell foam Thread: Red 8/0 or Red 70 denier Wing: White antron. Enjoy! Positive critques welcome. 1. Place hook in vise and start thread. 2. Cut a piece of foam about 1/8" wide and roughly the diameter of a spool thread long. Cut a "V" in one end to assist in tying in. 3. Tie in "V" of foam. 4. Tie in 3-5 strands of peacock herl. 5. Wrap herl forward and tie off. Clip excess materials. 6. Lay foam forward and secure with 3-5 wraps. 7. Tie in antron wings and do "figure 8" wraps so your wings lay evenly straight out perpendicular to the hook shank. 8. Tie off with your finishing knot of choice and WAH-LAH! I have had good luck on this pattern for 'gills, trout, and bass. More fun with foam to come...

Yes, very good pattern for the same reasons I gave for rrhyne's: easy to tie and very effective on a wide range of fish.
If I may make a couple of modification suggestions:
1. It can be done with black thread to "neaten it up."
2. It can be done with brown foam and thread, yellow foam and thread, or green foam and thread to more closely match beetles you may find in the location you are fishing. But black is the best "generic."
3. Try adding some Midge Flash to the antron yarn in the wings.

I used one like that, (mine have a hot pink antron indicator for a wing), in the high streams in CO. Great through rough riffles since it pops right back to the surface.

Great fly...I like to use a high vis color cause I cannot see small flies good on the water most of the time. So I use brown, black for the body, and say a fluorescent green, or pink color for the fibers. These flies are fun to make, can catch fish, what is not to like?

I took an entomology for fly fishers course this past weekend with Rob Woodruff and he said that every 5th species of creature in the world is a beetle, so it pays to have some in your fly box. I was amazed at how many we collected near the stream (Lower Mountain Fork in OK) in just a few passes of a butterfly net through the grasses along the bank. You know a bunch of those have to end up in the river.

I have been tying them for a year or so now and have been hammering bluegill and small bass locally, but I read this month's Fly Fisherman and there is an article on beetles. If you have time it's a good read....
