I have been using it like a Pop R. I have an eratic retrieve, pop pop pop pause, pop pop pause. I have heard that the YM should be skittered across the top like a fleeting shad, but I am not sure what that means. ps. I have caught plenty of fish by letting the fish tell me, I just want to get my $ worth on this thing

You can also work it with fast, continuous twitches and produce an action very similar to a spook, only much tighter back and forth. This retrieve works best for me when they're active. More like Ronnie said when they're a little less so.

Here's a little tip for you when it comes to these types of baits. Make sure your knot is located at the bottom of the line tie. If you do this, the bait will tend to "spit" more as the bait tends to move in an upward direction when you twitch it forward. If the knot ends up in the middle or top of the line tie, it seems to "pop" more as the nose of the bait is pulled stratight forward rather than in an upward direction. Also, you can fish these in many different ways and it's best to let the fish tell you what they want each day. Sometimes a steady cadence without any pauses is preferred while other times a pop or two then a long pause is required. Just depends on the mood of the bass.

how do you tie it at the bottom and not have it slide?

agree with the knot at the bottom of the line tie And don't use fluorocarbon line... 12-15# mono works best.

You just have to check the bait after a few cast and slide the knot down if it moves out of position. I also agree on the mono comment. Stay away from fluorocarbon line on topwater baits since it sinks and will affect the action of the bait. I use 15 lb (90% of the time) and even 20 lb mono for topwaters. Some folks like braid for them but I prefer to have a little more stretch in the line since these baits tend to have smaller hooks which can pull out easier if you apply too much pressure.

I do use mono on YM and braid on frog type! I will try to keep the line on the bottom. Will this help with the trebels staying free of the line?

14lb Mono on my topwater as well. I need to try some of the faster retrieves as well it looks like. Great info guys. By the way, I have both sizes, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce. It seems more people are using the smaller bait. How many are catching fish on the 1/2 ounce? Are the fish bigger? You know the old big bait/big fish theory?
