Im a Mercury guy but IMHO Mercs and Yammies are in a class of there own. Johnson/ Evinrude were ok back in the day but somewhere down the line they got left behind. Just my opinion but if it aint got a Mercury or Yamaha on it, I aint buying it.

You might be right. Im just goin by what I see on the lake. 45% Mercurys, 45% Yamahas, and 10% all other engines. I have a '99 model 225 Merc EFI and its a bad mo fo.

I now have an Optimax, and think it is the best. That being said, IMHO, Yamaha started all this 'surge' to excellence. They made the other companies continue to 'improve'.....instead of relying on the status quo USA mentality of the past. The Japanese have understood the 2 stroke / 4 stroke engine for years. Hell, they fought a war usin' em'.....No personal experience, but I bet Evinrude is a great engine as well. Competition made these engines what they are now. All technology is either shared, or stolen now days, so I don't see anyone gaining a huge advantage. Enjoy, and you old guys like me can leave 'most'of your tools in the truck. I love these new motors.

I've had a new '93 Merc, a new '96 Merc, a new '98 Merc, a new '01 Merc, and a new '03 Merc. never even a hint of trouble with the Merc's. Tried a new '06 225 Etec HO .... guess what I have now, ..............
a brand new ............2009 250 ETEC HO, love the power, the sound, the looks, and every thing about it. Gonna be hard to make me go back to a Mercury, unless there is lots of $$$$ difference. Never had a problem with the black engine, the Evinrude is just in a different league to me.
If you guys don't like the 'Rudes then you better not ever get a rig with one of the Etec's on it, unless you like to eat crow.
