Thinking about buying an older truck to get out of making payments. I would like some opinions on buing an older truck with a lot of miles on it. I have a car, so it would not be my only means of transport and I don't mind working on it. What type of truck should I look for? Anyone got a truck for sale that would be cheap to buy <$2500?

Lots of good trucks at there, just do some research on whatever you may find.

Don't want to get into transmission troubles. That would be just about what I was looking for otherwise.

I did this same exact thing a few years back. But I went "OLDER". I traded my 98 chevy off on a 71 chevy that needed a lot of TLC. Took it down to the cab and frame over one winter and reassembled it the way I want it. Mine had a good motor and trans, but needed about everything else. After the rebuild, I couldn't be happier. No emissions tests, easy to work on with regular tools, no catalytic converters, no O2 sensors. Just an old school truck that'll get me anywhere I want to go. And it even gets a little attention from passersby and passees every now and then.

Here she is when I got her;

Here she is at her worst;

Coming back together:

And he she is now (she actually has new shoes now too):

It was worth every dollar and hour spent. Especially since all this work took place during the last half of my wife's pregnancy!

And for anyone interested in this kind of thing. here's the link to a lot more pics of the build.

Yeah, it uses a little more fuel. But when I offset that cost against the payment & insurance of a new(er) truck, it comes out in my favor big time. Even with the cost of the build. Surprisingly, it didn't cost as much as one might think. Unless you factor in time, which you can't. How do you put a price on doing something you enjoy?

If I had a shop or even a garage to work in I would love to take on a project like that. Unfortunatly I do not, so I need a truck that is ready to drive as as. Cool truck though, came out nice!
