I'm planning to take a couple of friends out on the boat the week of July 4th. I used to always fish East Galveston Bay, but don't feel comfortable putting my boat in the water there since the storm. Any ideas for somewhere else to go, preferably 2-3 hours from the Houston area?

Indianola is a GREAT place to catch redfish and trout gallore! the people there are friendly and its a Very small town. its located just south of port lavaca. it takes me about 3 1/2 hours to get there from willis (on lake conroe)

My biggest worry is that my husband (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I might give that a try. Is the bay pretty shallow there? I'm going to be running a Mako 2201.

The Mako will be fine. If you don't mind running aways, you can reach all the popular spots in West Matagorda. If your worried about shallow, you probably want to avoid the back lakes and stick to the main bay. Also, lots of shallow sandbars up near the pass. I will be down in Port Oconnor, next town south from Indianola on the 4th and pretty much every weekend between now and then. I usually post a fishing report.

Thanks redneck and A draper. I think we are going Friday the 3rd. I'll look for your reports between now and then. I just bought the boat last year and don't want to tear it up in Galveston. Haven't been anywhere other than that so it's all new to me.

the number to the marina i stay at is 361-552-5350. ask for debra. there is lodging, a boat slip, bait, and peir fishing (where i caught the drum in my pic @ easter!). its $5 a day to fish, $5 to launch your boat for the day, and $10 to launch your boat over night. if you want to catch non-stop trout in the evening, get to the peir early and claim the VERY right corner (dont let the locals kick you out). great fishing all night!! there is also a local beach that you can surf fish on if you are interested in that, i caught some nice red a couple weekends ago. you will need at least 1 weeks notice to get a cabin smile have fun!

if you see him near the boat ramp or fish cleaning station, DONT FEED THE GATOR!!
Last year I was down there for a couple days and damned if we didnt see about an 6-8 footer in the channel across from the fish cleaning station!
Powderhorn Lake has a couple of good spots to fish along the East shoreline but be careful around there it can get shallow quick.
