Happily, I ordered a 4 wt. 8' TFO fly rod today. I'd like to learn what a few of the best flies are for bluegills. I already have a few and am sure I'll wind up with some that rarely get used, but I would appreciate knowing what a few top producers are from your experience.

small poppers are a must, I have good luck with scuds/shrimp patterns but really just about any trout pattern will catch sunfish

I'm voting for woolly buggers in olive and brown at least. I like buggers with a bead or cone head because they can be fished at just about any depth depending on the speed of your retreival.

As far as dry flies go, I've had good luck with elk hair caddis flies. The tan color of them seems to imitate things that 'gills find tasty on the surface.

I know that those are both terribly controversial choices smile , but I've had good luck with them.

Woolly buggers are a must have for sure #8 and even #6 catch tons. I have been catching a buttload of bluegills/warmouths while carp fishing some creeks by my house. I cast in front of a carp and a sunfish always seems to snag it first over there. I am using a rubber leg swimming nymph pattern on a #6 hook so I would imagine if you got a few prince nymphs and stone fly nymphs you would be set.

I use this

it is a yellow glass bead head rubber leggged grey hare dubbed fish catching machine tied on a number ten or 12 curved shank scud hook.

I can't believe that this thread has been going on this long and no one has mentioned foam spyders and Cap Spiders. I always start with yellow foam spyders till the fish prove that they want any different color. When they won't eat from the surface, just use a Cap Spider. Olive, black and chartreuse in that order of Cap Spiders work best for me. Sometimes a bugger will outfish them, but not very often. Any 5 year old that wants to learn to tie them can do it.

Grasshopper patterns along the bank are good right now too.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Sometimes, just to prove that I can, I wrap a num 6 scud hookshank with brown thread and proceed to catch fish just fine that way. Sunfish are not the pickiest eaters.

I love PMX's. Yellow, Orange or Olive in a size 10-14. They work when nothing else will.

Poppers, and the foam spiders will work great on top.

Any bead head nymph pattern will work under the surface.

I have caught a bunch of bluegill on stimulators as well.....especially in olive.
