I went Saturday and caught a some largemouth and one smallmouth. The bass are on the move again! My old spots are heating up temp wise and the bass are moving deeper. The thermocline is around 10-12 feet so the bass are going to be held up around that depth for a while. I went to the dam area and caught a few larger fish around sunken trees in 15 feet of water. The morning bite is the best.
I did catch a 5 pound cat on a spinnerbait!!! That cat was full of eggs and they were actually coming out so I threw her back....
By 10am the boats are everywhere and there is no way to fish the main lake. I have found a point that extends out into the lake pretty far that I will be fishing on next time. I hope it holds some fish. I like Canyon Lake its a challenge to catch a fish over 4 pounds out there! not to mention you can drive around after noon and people(girl) watch! hehehe
Lure thats still hot for me is the car-rig lizard-watermelon color from lake fork tackle. I caught a few on a finesse worm but the lizard keeps catching the bigger fish. I tried some jigs but the little guys eat it and i set on them and nothing! I have not had any luck on a crank? I tried a spinnerbait in the morning wind with only one cat and a 1-1/2 pounder to show for it. The fish used to be popping the top but not now with this wind in the mornings!
good luck out there!!

I was out there fishing Sunday and it was tough tough for me.
All the spots that I usually fish, now have a green moss type junk on the bottom (been about 3 months or more since I've been out there). Fishing soft plastics in these areas are pretty much worthless. I ended up throwing crankbaits instead and caught a few small fish on this and 1 real nice, real fat 7lb blue cat. Wind kicked up and kicked me off the lake as I was fishing mostly main lake pts.

I was out there on Saturday morning also. Got out there a little late, but the fishing was good. I don't know about you guys, but the topwater bite was no bueno for me.
We caught approx. 15 fish, and had a nice 6.5lb largemouth to top off the day. He came out of the water five times while bringing him to the boat! He looked like he was 10 lbs when he came out of the water. Caught six fish right off the same rockpile, he was the last fish we caught there.
I agree, the green junk is getting worse. I have found that the spots that have the junk, won't hold fish near as well. I have a couple spots that were great back in Apr. and Mar, but now have that stuff on the bottom and the fish are gone.
Good to hear everyone had a good trip.
Did you guys see the biker/jet ski gang (30-40 jet skies) that ran up the lake around 10:00 am. What the heck was that about?

Tamale... PM me I got a few NEW spots for you with gps cords... I dont mind sharing my spots cause I like catching fish and hope everyone else can learn from my experiences out there!
hint get a few rubber pegs from Academy and peg a 1/8th or 1/4 ounce worm wieght about 12-18 inches above a lizard or worm. It will keep you out of that moss grass and in the strike zone longer.
The key is finding trees or structure on a drop off in 10-15 feet with deeperwater close. Mark it with a bouy and return after around 20 minutes to let the fish get back active after running over them. I have found that the clear water is tough to get the fish biting after you run over them.
The bigger fish are smacking the bream in the morning but I cant find a bait that they will hit. I am trying to find a swim bait, crank, or something they will hit. No luck yet!

I fished Friday, and Sunday and was tough for me. All my fish came on a spinnerbait(Nichols shattered glass blue shad) Caught 3 or 4 keepers each time...no bites on worms. Mostly right up against the rocks. Fished the mid-lake near Canyon Park and the area direcly across from Potters' Creek Park. Did catch 3 smallies(14"-15")...they put up a hell of a fight! Wind was extremely tough to worm. Good luck for you guys fishing the tourney.

So I'm going to be a novice and ask a question...when you guys say that you caught some keepers, do you keep them? I'm just asking because I am interested in knowing if the LM and SM bass are good eats. I know ya'll love the sport, but I was curious. Thanks. Steven

steven168 we say keepers because its a fish that is over the legal minimum length for that kind of fish. 14" is the min for largemouth bass on most lakes around here. So, if your largemouth bass is over 14" its a "keeper".
I don't keep fresh water fish too often they are not exactly the best eating fish. I like catching them better. If you throw them back you or someone else can catch em.
Not to mention if I kept every fish over 14" my freezer would be full to the max with fish and there is no way I would eat it all! lol

Same here, keeper means legal length. My keepers will be swimming back in the lake within 1-2 minutes after the catch.
Not starting another "you shouldn't ever eat a bass thread", but Canyon can use all the conservation it can get. Its a lake that is getting better as far as quality fish go, but will get better faster, without all the keepers going in the freezer.

in catfishing we call them "eaters"
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way you are a mile away, AND you have their shoes.

Have not fished Canyon since they started draining it. Can someone tell me what ramps are open. How about Tom's creek or state park cove?
Thanks,
God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day. And, when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray When in the Lord's safe landing net I'm peacefully asleep. That in His mercy I be judged as big enough to keep!!

Toms Creek and Hill Country Village are the only 2 open on the Startzville side of the lake.
