It's that time again. The flying bugs are out, and some how they find a way into the house. Would a blue light zapper knock them out pretty good? Hung outside my door near the porch light? Or is there a better way?

I hear ya. I've been invaded lately. Does the zapper take care of flys also?

I don't know, I have mainly moths and potato bugs. We haven't had enough rain for the skeeters yet.

It is a never ending battle when you live at the lake. I have even added a bug controlling unit to my sprinkler system just to knock them back a bit.

It depends on what the bugs are. Zappers will attract and kill a variety of flying insects, and there is the satisfaction of the 'zap--sizzle'. But your neighborhood will have an inexhaustible supply of insects to fry.

If it's mosquitoes, get a propane-powered mosquito killer that attracts them with heat, carbon dioxide, light, and a chemical attractant. Those are effective.

They work a little, but there will always be more insects to kill. If you do use one do not put it on your back porch. Remember, the insects are drawn to it. Put it as far away from where you'll be as you can in your yard and let it attract them over there. Also, plant citronella plants around your back porch

Bug zappers are fun, but no help.

In 1996, University of Delaware researchers Timothy Frick and Douglas Tallamy published a study in the journal Entomological News. They had collected and identified the kills from six bug zappers at various sites throughout suburban Newark, Del., during the summer of 1994. Of the nearly 14,000 insects that were electrocuted and counted, only 31 (0.22 percent) were mosquitoes and biting gnats. The largest number (6,670, or 48 percent) were midges and harmless, aquatic insects from nearby bodies of water.
