Just make sure you adjust the thumb wheel knob first with the other dial set to minimum. Click it and let your lure fall. It should just touch the ground and stop. Then adjust the cast control to about the middle. Cast at half speed till your good then start working on distance.
 Boatless for minute

These are all great ways to prevent backlash, but just in case you do get the occasional case of "professional overrun" , try using some Reel Magic before you use that reel for the day. It really lubricates the line and makes the chore of cleaning up those backlashes much easier. It's also great for adding a little distance to the cast without having to throw harder. Disclaimer: I am not sponsored by Reel Magic, but if they want to throw a little change or product my way, feel free!

I've always used Trilene XL but decided to try Gamma line on one of my Revo's. Used the reel on the same rod as before. The Gamma is coming off and Trilene is going back on. Even sprayed some KD on the line.:(

These above are great advise. Another thing that also might help conserve some fishing line, since i know how expensive it can get to keep changing line..... Is to spool your reel up like normal and when your ready to go to the lake and cast pull as much line out as you think your going to need to cast the bait your using. Then put a piece of electrical tape right there on the spool covering the line. This will ensure that if you do backlash it will not birnest all of the line on your reel.
hope this helps +100 that helped me so much when i started wiht my baitcaster, cept i pulled out double the amount I'd need to cast. this helped me get the feel for stopping it on time with my thumb, and if i did backlash..it was only 1 or 2 layers deep, not all the way down

You may also try treating the line with Line and Lure. It helps relax the memory in the line which will help it come off the spool easier and if you do get a backlash it makes it easier to get out. Spray the LNL and let it set overnight.

hope this helps Dayum...I'm thinking about all the line I could have saved if I had thought of that! Thanks for the obvious but somehow never thought of tip!
