OK guys, I am 6'3" 350lb (but quite handsome, so I'm told nuts) I sold my bass boat. Lakes are too rough, and too crowded. Gander Mountain has a OK Drifter for $669 less 20%. It's supposed to have the widest seating area, and it's rated for 450-500lb.

Am I crazy to try and get my lard [censored] out on a kayak? I don't want to spend 2K on a pro angler and then find out I'm gonna tip the thing over everytime I get a fish on. I just don't know much about kayaks, and the stability. It just looks like a great peaceful way to fish. And I could use the excercise.

What do you think? Would you put Refrigerator Perry in a yak?

sit on top kayaks are great, however i think a 14 or 15 ft canoe is better for me i traded my kayak for a 15 ft grumman canoe ,i can paddle it kayak style or use the seat ;more room .moves very well ,maybe a little harder than kayak in 20+ winds but i try to stay out of it .went to brazos this morning put in on 180 west of minaral wells paddled up river about 2.5 miles fished, had a blast .i wade fish alot pulling the canoe ,

There are bigger people than you in kayaks. You will need a bigger kayak than I (@ 5'10" 160 lbs) do but there are several well within your budget and acceptable performance for a man of your size.
Suggest whatever kayak you get, get the highest seat available or you will be miserable.
Besides the drifter you may want to look at Cobra Fish n Dive or the Marauder.
Also suggest that whatever kayak you buy get all of the hatch options available and get the rod holders installed to your specs.

I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

Check with ACK for a paddle day where you can choose a few kayaks that you think might suit you well and paddle them. I'm not sure where the nearest ones is to you though.

OK drifter isn't Ocean Kayak's best wide high capacity kayak, the OK Big Game angler might probably be more suitable; but there are other brands too with high capacity kayaks that'll work just fine if you want to paddle instead of pedal; I suggest renting a few and see what you like unless you can find a kayak demo days coming up; I know there'll be some in September in Houston, Austin, San Marcos, but don't know your Corsicana area. I paddled a while before upgrading to pedals in addition to a paddle.

Higher capacity often means a drier ride/less prune skin and monkey butt.

Wider kayaks are "generally" slower, BUT a freind of mine gets around quite well on his Big Game (actually he is a much better paddler too and routinely passes me in my 30" kayak, leaving me to wallow in his wake.)

Try before u buy

Drifter
http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/angler_editions/drifter_angler.html
LENGTH 12' 7" / 3.9 m
WIDTH 32.5" / 82.5 cm
SEAT WIDTH 22" / 55.9 cm
WEIGHT 56 lbs / 25.4 kg
MAX CAPACITY 450-500 lbs /
204.1 - 226.8 kg

Big Game
http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/angler_editions/prowler_big_game.html
LENGTH 12' 9" / 3.9 m
WIDTH 34" / 86.4 cm
SEAT WIDTH 29.5" / 74.9 cm
WEIGHT 69 lbs / 31.3 kg
MAX CAPACITY 550-600 lbs /
249.5-272.1 kg

I'm selling my old kayak to a neighbor(30" wide, but a flat hull for stability, and 450 lb capacity) I paddled, and buying a Hobie ProAngler

TD has a used big game for $700.00 on http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=122721

He's an unemployed Obamanomics economy victim, so selling his toys.
It appears virtually unaltered, so you can add the big square hatch or modify the rod pod, etc if you want.
