So glad you posted about the subject! Was on the boat one evening just before dark and kept hearing a buzzing soundfrom time to time that sounded like it was coming from the boat light in the back. Told the boyfriend to listen and he heard it as well. We were not fishing at the time so did not experience what you were describing with the rods but I did make the annoucement that I had an eerie feeling and we should go! Always trust your instincts is what I say!
When life gets you down, go fishing!

Now I feel like it happens a lot more often then I ever wanted to believe. "sounded like frying bacon on the pavement" and "as if someone had snuck up behind us and hit us on top of the head with a rubber mallet". I would advise anyone that hears the sounds described above to get low & get off the water quick. Being hit with a rubber mallet & arching fishing line is minor. Losing my son or one of you or your friend, or family member would be not be. Please, share this with others you know because its that time of yr. & you might be saving a life. Then again I wouldnt have believed it unless I saw it w/my own eyes and felt it the way I did. Now Im a believer!

Those are some hair raising stories. I respect the storms a great deal, been caught out there too many times to take any chances.

We got caught out on fairfield recently. it's only 2500 acres. we were anchored against the bank and the storm came from behind. heard a clap of thunder and it was too late. we reeled em in and headed out of the cove but it was already too late. running to the ramp wasnt an option. we went and hung out underneath the transmission lines coming from the plant. it's easy to get caught out. all lightning is is a really big dose of static.

Below is a post I made a while back about my experience.
While at Lake Ponchartrain LA. about two years ago my father and I were enjoying a great day catching speckled trout when strange things started to happen. First I began hearing a very low high-pitch noise that was coming off the tips of our fishing poles. Shortly after, our fishing line began to rise to an arch out of the water. Our 3/4 oz jigs would not sink due to the lift on the line. At this point we began to head toward home only to be cut off by a huge storm with lightning striking at the edge of it. We stopped at the edge of the storm debating if we should drive through it or drive away from it which would place us in the middle of the Lake far from home. Looking at my father I noticed that his hair was standing straight up. At that point the lightning began to strike all around us and then "bam". After a short blackout I looked at my father and asked him; did you feel that?!! We both later described it as if someone had snuck up behind us and hit us on top of the head with a rubber mallet. Scared for I life we drove to the middle of the Lake away from the storm and preyed it would not follow. The storm eventually passed and we made it home safe but very shaken. Another boater who was also out there with us said he actually saw the lightning go through his fingers out to the steering wheel and other parts of the boat. Lake Ponchartrain! Where did you grow up? Fished Hopedale area when I still live in Louisiana, thus the screen name. Scary story, glad to say in all the years I've been fishing, I've not had that happened.

It happend to me today on Cedar Creek. I just kept fishing. The rod was shaking and making nosie as I fished. I would face it to the water and it would quit but when I raised it it would start again.

You, my friend, are flirting with ....... Hopedale, I grew up in Mandeville on the shoreline of Lake Ponchartrain. Parents now live on the water in Lacombe. That lake is by far some of the best fishing I have ever experienced. Got to watch those storms though.

When the rods start buzzing - you know its to late. And if you have girls in the boat and their hair starts rising above their heads yep - that's to late too.
Ive been extremely luck not to get killed by lighting (and I mean extremely LUCKY).
Now as a guide and having been out there so much and I have other folks (customers that are depending on me to do the right thing for their lives and safety). If I hear it or see it coming (even on the cell phone looking at the radar and its moving into our county) we are going in RIGHT NOW.
Just ask Lee Trevino (who has been stuck twice by lighting as a professional golfer) you wont have to ask Lee twice if it's time to get off the lakes (or golf course).
Get off (or stay off) our lakes when its in the area (It will kill you).
