That there's what you would call a Pro Tip.

Thank you for posting this. I actually signed on just now to ask the same question...

As a followup, I have used 113H's and 6'8" 30-50lb Daiwa rods a couple times trolling near shore. They seemed to overpower the (small) kings we caught. Do you have any suggestions for going a little bit lighter? I also find the senators and rods I have are kind of unwieldy for my 12 year old son.

I have a couple older Shimano Speedmasters. How do you think they would work on a couple 15-30 lb rods, and 25-30lb line?

I appreciate your help. I have pretty limited trolling experience.

Kapn Bill

The Penn Slammer series Spinner Combo rigs are great for Smacks and Smaller to mid sized Kings. The problem with any school fish is we don't get to pick the size that eats the bait.. sometimes you get spooled by a smoker.. just take plenty of extra line when you fish light line for Kings.

You would want to drift Shimp boats culling or rigs with these combos.. they really dont hold enough line for trolling unless you go with 40# braid and a short 10yd 40# Mono topshot

The Speed Master reels will do fine but I'd get a 30-50# rod for trolling with 25-30# because the sweet spot on those rods you have is for 20# line.. of you hit a Big Jack it might snap the rod. Check out Bar Bar Custom Rods on Ebay for some great King rods at a fair price.
