Fishing out of Ambergris?

Yea I was at El Pescador...The 1st one weighed in at about 3.5 lbs. We also caught a few bigger than that, but most were in the 1 to 2 lb range, but still a battle.

Yes, lots of 1 to 2 pound bones there...and they are a blast.

See any Permit or Tarpon?

1 - 2 lb bones sure would be fun on a 5wt!

Yes, probably fun to fight one on a 5 wt, but it would be a rare day on the bonefish flats when a 5 wt could effectively punch through the wind accurately to 60 feet with minimal backcasts while throwing lead eye flies....plus you just never know when an opportunity for a Permit may present itself....and believe me, you do not want to mess with most typical Permit on a 5 wt.

A 2 pound bone, even on a 9 wt, will make one or two runs well into the backing and sometimes make you think they will strip you. Great, great fish. IMO, pound-for-pound, the greatest fighting fish on a fly rod.

Oh I agree, but when you have a calm day on the flats and see a tailing bonefish, having one rigged up in the rod holder might not be a bad idea. Granted your average vacationer might not have one of those days while on a trip, but you damn well better believe if I was a guide, I would have one on my boat. Now permit are a totally different ballgame and an awesome one at that!

I took my 6 wt down there just for fun and caught a few on it. But like you said the biggest problem was casting anywhere past 40-50 feet through the wind with it. I had my Helios 8 wt and it did the job just fine.

I hooked up on 3 permit but the rest of the days were tough due the wind changing and the water being glass-like. Its hard to throw a size 2 crab with no splash.

Hook one tarpon, but one jump and it was off. Rookie mistake. I'm still kicking myself today.

Nah, I stick to Orvis. I know some may disagree but i have always used their stuff and I love the warranty (its hard to beat). In fact I broke one of my Helios' rods while in Belize and I sent it back when i got home and got it back in about a week in a half. I like that service.

I've casted a few sage rods and love them though...

I hear you, I have casted a Helios and I liked it a lot, I am just a sage/scott guy. Oh and welcome to the forum, how are you connected to Texas?

Nothing wrong with that...I live in Coppell for summer and attend Colorado School of Mines during the school year.
