I was just looking at the map, and realized I've never been down to the coast near Seadrift and San Antonio Bay. Anyone familiar with that area? I was wondering if it's nice down there, or full of refineries. Would it be a good place to take the boat for a weekend?

The area is protected by an animal sanctuary and Seadrift is tiny in itself.

Boat traffic can be heavy but I haven't fished it in almost 2 years..

Wooo!

Good to know -- I've been to Rockport/Fulton and Galveston/Bolivar, but not really anywhere else along the Texas Coast (except for S. Padre a long time ago for Spring Break).

San Antonio Bay and the Seadrift regions are good places to fish. And I've fished them several times. But I wouldn't take my own boat there...try a guide..there's entirely too many Oyster Reefs in that bay system to tackle it by yourself. Try a guide a time or two to get the feel of it. Chris Martin of Seadrift is a good guide and Green Hornet Guides from Rockport are excellent as well.

Thanks klr. I'll probably go down once without the boat just to check the place out. Sounds pretty nice.

I have been going to Seadrift twice a year for the last three years. We always stay at Bayflats Lodge. Great place. If you have experience driving a boat in Texas bays, Seadrift or San Antonio bay is not that dangerous. Just watch for reefs, and don't go 100 mph all over the bay.
I went two weeks ago, we did not have much luck on artificial, but did pretty good on croaker. Stay on the protected shoreline. Work your way out to reefs that are marked with stakes. Anchor close to them and throw live bait. If you do not have any hits within tens minutes go to another reef. That is what the guides do everytime I go with them. They have to find the fish. Do that all day and you should come home with a fair amount of specks. If you catch a red it will be on the smaller side, though we did catch a few keepers.
Also, fish some of the spoils around the ship channel. We caught some monster sheephead with live shrimp there. Anchor and throw towards the bank with a popping cork. I caught one sheepy that weighted a little over 7 pounds. My personal best.

Wow, both those places are pretty spendy, Falcon Point Ranch especially. $325 a night? Yikes. When I go to the coast, I usually look for "cheap but clean" accommodations, like Balboa Courts in Rockport. Any recommendations along those lines?

yey, it's real pricey, but it is all inclusive and a REAL nice place. Gourmet meals you will not soon forget and an open bar with pretty much anything you want. The boat dock is lit up nicely at night and I have caught 200+ fish in a couple of hours off of it. But no, it is not cheap.

I see they have a suite, would that be a cozy getaway for two?

Try Captian's Quarters in SeaDrift (361) 785-4982. $75 a night or they have (1) suite that is $160 a night. Suite has full size kitchen, 2 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms. Really nice and comfortable for the money. Also, just down the street about 500 yards is Barketts restaurant. Awesome seafood. Have fun!!

P.S. or you could try Coastal Waterfowl in SeaDrift. They have a lodge you can use for $95 a night which includes dinner and if you want to book him for a day of fishing he's right there. Call Cap'n Kris Kelly @ (361) 648-3474 or check out his website @coastalwaterfowl.com Tell him Troy sent ya. He owns the lodge and guide service. I've always limited out on quality specs/reds everytime with him. Good luck!!
