i was told that the catfish guides on rivers and some lakes will get an empty potato/berlap sack and stick a few rocks inside with a decent amount of dog food and will wait a week,or so to take their customers there and will have swarms of catfish around is this true to any extent???(and it's tied up)

also would milo and magic bait chum, as well as some dog food do well to chum them up if rigged like so or with a half cinder block tied up to the lead line?....and how long would you wait if you were to fish this area that is being chummed?

the only catfish guide trip i ahve been on is with mr. whiskers and he uses soured grain as chum. and he doesnt try and hide it. before we fished we stopped at 3 spots and threw out some chum then went back to the first and started fishing. only had to fish 2 of the 3 chummed areas before we limited. alot of fun

Fish on!!!

i have seen fishermen use burlap sacks full of range cubes, dog food, and other stuff to bring in cats. I have also seen them pull the bags up after a week. The bags will be ripped all over. This seems to work great for buffalo and channels. Never have caught any nice blues around these spots though.

It will hold the channels and buffs in an area for about a week to 10 days sometimes. You will still have to sweeten the spot with chum like range cubes or soured grain.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

What FishHauler said...great for channels, but not so much for blues of any size.

works good for channels but it will "run off" the yellas they prefer live bait.

I had no idea this was such contraband... I don't do it personallly because it wouldn't work for my style anyway, but what is wrong w/ it? I say we don't do it on our website, because we don't, but if you go out, catch a ton of fish, and are happy... get on with it.

Baiting a hole is just a guides way of doing his best to see that his party takes home a sack of fish and should be commended. I've baited a hole before with a sack full of OlRoy dogfood before. You could tell it was down there even a week after I put it down there because it created a kind of oil slick and you could even smell the dogfood. The only thing I caught off that spot was carp and buffalo so I never baited with dogfood again. I use cube and soured grain now with good results as long as I don't forget the sack of cubes in the back of my truck like I've done for the past two trips. Doh!

i never said it was "bad" I fish with a guy who swears by this technique. I personally like to chase the blues whe possible. Sometimes it is just a lot of fun to catch a ton of channels and buffs. In that case it is a good idea. I dont know how it will work with flowing water, that might dissolve the range cubes too fast and make it less effective over time.

In flowin water should work BETTER cause it makes a scent trail downstreem right to the bait. yes mite not last as long but should work quicker

Chumming won't do you one bit of good for blue cat but if you are after channel cat it works and there aint a darn thing wrong with it!
