Guys, I'm not a saltwater fisherman at all. I spend all of my time bass angling around DFW, but am headed down to Pointe West in a couple of weeks. Our condo is so far west that we're a 2 minute walk from the bay and 2 minutes from the surf. I plan to rent a kayak for the week and keep it on the beach, so i'll have that @ my disposal, along with a couple of baitcasters with medium action rods.
Just wondering what my best bet is for getting into some gamefish?
I brought my cast net last year and tried to catch some bait in the bay and use that, but apparently i got into some jellyfish because i burned the tar out of my arms throwing the net to the point that i didn't even feel like sticking it out to fish.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Ryan

The simple answer is this..
Surf in the morning and bay in the evening..
Where are you renting the yak from?
You're best bet will be a gold spoon in the surf for trout and reds. Personally I would buy a surf setup and try to target sharks, tho, it will prob. be hit or miss.
If you are going to fish out of the yak shoot there is a whole book and website dedicated to Galveston Kayak Trails, google a search for it.
Wind is a real bugger right now and I canceled my Galv. this week and set it up next week.. Winds should lay down.. THEN ITS FISH ON!
If you got kayak skills you could meet up with people from the Texas Kayak Fisherman forum, they always down there in groups fishing.. Sure they would lend you some beater gear and give you pointers too if you wanna go chase sharks with them in the surf.
Wooo!

I have fished Galveston since I was old enough to wade without drowning. If the surf is calm I would concentrate all of my efforts there. I know this sounds repetitive, but make sure you fish the moving tides. The surf can really heat up fast when the tide is moving. Make sure you are out there at high tide. If the surf is busted up and brown colored I would concentrate on the bay side. You could also fish San Luis Pass. Throw live bait in the pass. Something will eventually take your offering. It may not be a quality keeper, but you will get some action. The bay side can be hit or miss. Just keep wading and throwing your favorite bait. I would throw something you can cover a lot of ground with. Throw a super spook or a dark colored plastic. You may have to work for them. Also, the flats in that area run really shallow for a good distance out into the bay. You may have to walk a good ways out into the bay to get to some deeper water if the fish are not holding shallow.

Is the galveston fishing pier still there? I have some friends in Houston that tell me it was destroyed during Ike. I used to fish there all the time and had my picture on the wall, what a shame if its gone.

Thanks for the good advice, everyone. So think any of my freshwater cranks will work in the bay? I've got a chrome and shad colored super spook, so I'll try that. I'd love to see a red blow up a spook, that just sounds like a ton of fun. I currently have 30lb braid with a 10lb flourocarbon leader on my baitcaster. will that work for the bay? Any recos for line/leader combo in the surf, assuming i go for shark?
Thanks again.
