16 bridge is the easy access to the river but you have to go about a mile upriver to the dam (most of the water is moving pretty good). You can put in close to the dam if you can get your kayak down the steep bank - we have got canoes down there using the concrete around a drain (it is really steep but has pretty good grip).

My son and I have pontoons and I am wanting to make the hwy 16 to rochells trip on them. I have made that trip many times in a canoe but the last time was about 18 years ago. Do yall think a pontoon could make the trip?

That would be a work out, but with a trolling motor it might not be so bad. May have to rent some yak's.

No way I would try it in a pontoon without a trolling motor - unless you are planning on making it a 3-4 day trip. Like it says above there is usually always a wind in your face and alot of still water to get through.

How many portages do you have to make above Hwy 16 to the dam? Last year, we had to get out 2-3 times to get up there. There was an old pipeline running across there at one point.

It's still 2-3 portages depending on your draft. I can scoot over the pipe in my yak, but I scratch the pipe going over it.
