I'm building one this week for my SWB Chevy. I'll post pics when done.

When I had a truck I really didn't like anything hanging out the end. I have built a couple of simple racks that sit in the bed and allow the kayak or canoe to go over the cab where it's up and out of the way, and leaving the bed open for gear. 2x4's, PVC pipe or steel I've seen it done many different ways..

here's a simple one http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/panfish/part453.php
and another

I also put mine in the bed of my pickup. I use a bed extender that slips inside my trailer hitch. A foam block and a couple of ratchet straps and you're set. heres a link to the bed extender that I have. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39168
