if you had flouro on using mostly plastics, etc... and you wanted to throw a top could you use a mono leader? if so how long of one.
also if braid for topwater would you go straight braid or mono leader?
thanks

Use a leader when fishing braid on a topwater, or the front hook will get fouled on the braid a lot. I've had good success with 8lb braid & flouro leader. Just have to wait a heartbeat before setting the hook.

Flouro also sinks, causing it to pull the nose of your topwater down. I like flouro, but not for topwaters.

FWIW, I use 30 lb PowerPro and 20 lb. Flurocarbon leader exclusively on my baitcasters - I usually put about 6 feet on with an Albright knot. No problem with topwaters for me, at least. I have been extremely dissapointed with using 15 lb braid and attaching it to leader material as it has a tendency to cut the leader material and I watch my lure fly away unrestrained. On my spinning reel I switched from braid to mono and will use the 20lb. fluoro leader this next weekend in a tournament in Port A. In either case, the knot you use to attach to the topwater is critical. I use either a Trilene knot, or my favorite, the non-slip mono loop. http://www.netknots.com/html/non_slip_loop_knot.html

I have 20/6 Power Pro braid on my baitcasters. I tie about 6 ft. of 15lb mono for a leader. I attache the braid to mono via a uni-to-uni knot and then tie on the topwater with a loop knot. I've never had any problems, never lost a lure nor have I ever been broke off.
On edit: I probably just cursed myself.

I do have one spinning rig with 20 lb PowerPro and never broke that off either. Dunno why the 15 seems to be cursed with the breakoff syndrome. I had tried the Uni to Uni, but the darn thing always seem to hang a bit on the guides and shortened my casting distance.

I use PP on all my reels. And all have the mono/fluoro shock leader of 4'+. Mono is great for the shock leader because it's easier to tie and you can bite it off with you teeth. lol. As of now I'm using Seaguar Fluoro for my shocks. (line cutter is a must). I have no problems with it throwing topwaters.
oh yeah, the albright is the ONLY knot to use for braid<>mono.
just my .02

mono would be best i think for top water floro is heavy in the water and mono will float and mono is stiff so that when u are in the retrieve the hooks on the lure will not tangle in the line or the line will not tangle on the hooks of the lure but for the most part i use mono for top water and floro for jigs, cranks, spinners . I hope i have been helpful with the advice .
