Took a young Army LT just back from Afghanistan (after 18 Months there) out to Lake Grapevine hunting for the Sandy and we only caught 15 this afternoon/tonight. Hit all the usual "hotspots" and found the fish to be scattered and not schooled up. I did catch a 5 lb Catfish on a slab though and that was fun...but, would have rather had the LT catch it.

My wife and I went out this past Saturday and caught 45 in about an hour and a half. So, I was disappointed in the results for him.

Do any of you think the Storms had anything to do with it? Are they not schooling this time of year? Maybe I wasn't in the right spots. And, please don't get me wrong...it was sure nice to be out on the water and we didn't get skunked...so, I can't complain too much (and, we weren't getting shot at).

I am heading out with a fellow TFF'r on Friday and he is a guru...so, I hope to learn some valuable lessons from him.

Hopefully, it was just an "off-night".

Take care.

Rex

The various humps around the rock crusher have been the best producer for me lately. This time last year you could catch a hundred around the east side of the island but haven't had any luck there this year but it seems every day is different. Murrel has produced small fish for me. Kinda tough right now. Last Saturday I had 2 limits by 10:30 and threw back more than double that amount around one spot at rock crusher. If you were off 50 ft you couldn't buy a bite, but if you dropped a slab on top of those humps it was on.

JW,

The humps were "dry holes" strangely at the Rock Crusher, Murrell and the Island. There were alot of small schools and singles out there. We caught most of our 15 trolling. Wierd day...don't know if the storms earlier had anything to do with it or not?

Hope to see you out there sometime.

Rex

I had the same situation this last Sunday (5/31/09) out there. Small schools around the humps @ Rock Crusher. Nothing around the island. Unfortunately the water was so rough from all the boaters it wasn't much fun, but that was another post altogether, huh? - I'm thinking of venturing over to EM or LL on my weekday off. Hearing a lot of good reports on them.

Redleg,

Are you a retired Canon Cocker? Rog on the island...it has minimally produced the last couple of weeks. The Rockcrusher and Murrell Park have produced well for me up until yesterday.

I am heading back out on Friday and hope to get back into them. I thought it strange yesterday that they were so scattered. Where do they go? What makes them scatter? Life's mysteries.

Let us know how EM or LL goes if you hit them.

Take care.

Rex

As many times as I have fished G'vine over the years and have driven around that bouy out there I still cannot find the humps for the rock crusher area. I can find plenty of other humps for my catfishin but have never found this area of humps. Where abouts is it near the obstruction bouy?

East - I'd say get out about 200 yards or so directly east from the buoy and start heading north.

There are also more north of the buoy.

In regards to the humps, the buoy is a frame of close proximity reference where close proximity may be 500 to 1000 yards.

If you have a navionics chip, they are well pronounced on the chip.
With summer coming up, you should be able to potlick the humps pretty easily.

It does get shallow around the hump.
The actual rock crusher isn't close to the buoy. <Note: Never found it myself, but I do have GPS coordinates for it. :p >

I surfed by to see if I should hit the vine today.
Guess I need to go!

Hey Rex, those Sandies will scatter all depending on what the bait is doing. If you arent finding any bait, you most likely won't find the sandies. This time of year the shad will move in more shallow to spawn and you will find sandbass scattered around off the main points of coves and nearer the shore where the bait is. Later on (Late June-August) the bait will move out and school up as will the sandbass. Then the surface fishing starts which is a real blast. A buddy of mine and I had those suckers down to the minute last year at Lewisville.
