I would like to start air brushing crank baits and other hard baits and had a few questions.
What paint works and holds best?
Also what is a good inexpensive airbrush?
I would like to keep this project under 150$ since i dont even know if i will be any good at it.
Also what is the best way to lear how to do scale patterns? and other stuff.
I am stricktly doing this as a hobby so if any of you want to pm me with any advice i wont be trying to take your business or anything.
Unless i get really good wink LOL
THanks in advance
JT

There's a dude on ebay that sells some crankbaits in the $150 range. That's insane! His cheapest baits will go for like $22. I bought me all the stuff I needed to paint anything I want, a lure to a car. You won't regret getting into it other than you might not have any time to fish. I like you have looked everywhere for the "ultimate guide to painting lures". It's really a lot of learn from your mistakes type stuff. I don't have any pics of lures but here is some stuff I've made for my son.

He's really big into Halo so I made him a custom Halo computer and for Halloween I fabricated and painted him his own Master Chief costume. Now if I could just get good enough to sell $100 lures, lol.

I ended up painting his Halo "logo" on this side but dont have pictures of it.

Totally awesome site with lots of stuff.
Paasche single stage airbrush kits go on sale at Hobby Lobby for $50 - $60. They're economical, hardworking brushes that have lasted us for many years of use (and abuse!). Perfect to start out with.

We sell a Crankbait Painting Basics DVD that will jump start you with painting and clearcoating crankbaits. It isn't everything there ever was to know, but it will save you a bunch of time and frustration. The DVD covers three different patterns and foiling baits (a lost art), basic equipment, thinning paints, airbrush operation, safety etc. For an Airbrush I highly recommend www.buyairbrushes.com. The PS900 is as good as any Iwata, which is regarded by most to be one of the best brushes on the market. Use the coupon code bigfish1 and it will bring the price down to $71. You will need to get a hose also with the brush. We don't have anything to do with this company, but we like their prices and products. The guys on Tackle Underground also like the brushes they sell. That is how I learned about them. If you don't have a compressor and regulator you will need that also. Good luck with getting started. It is a lot of fun making your own creations! I have personally seen my catches go up with the patterns I have created.

Watch Hobby Lobby for sales. You can get cupons for 40% off of airbrush stuff. You can get a really good airbrush for almost half off.

I second tackleunderground.com. More info there than you can possibly read.

A guy that I have bought tackle from in Nacogdoches may be able to help you as well. Jason Quinn also uses this guy....his website is www.paintyourbait.com.

He is great guy, and also was also a member of the SFA bass team that won the inaugural college bass fishing championship.

Look on ebay for an Iwata. I got mine for $90 brand new and Hobby Town had it for $240. And the easiest paint to start with is Createx, its water based and supper easy to use. And use the tackle underground.
