Trollin motor problem

Just bought a boat and it has a 71lb thrust motorguide trolling motor on it, it has one red and one black wire comming for the trolling motor , its not connected with a plug but instead runs the wires straight to the batteries, problem is when it gets to the back of the boat there are 2 red and 2 black, hooked it up the wasy its suppose to with one red on one battery and neg on the other battery and a heavy duty cable between the + and - both batteries, but i still only get 12 volts out of it, no matter how i try it, also it will work with either negative connected but not with either positve, only with one of the +, so anybody got any idea how to get this figured out without taking it to the shop, thanks for yalls help

you need to get a male plug and wire it to the plug so you can plug it in.I,m assuming you have a female plug in the front of your boat right.

pos to one batt , neg to the other with a jumper between the other pos and neg, now with a multi meter measure arcoss between the pos and neg and you should have 24 if you measure just one batt youll only have 12 its measuring between the two that gives 24

if you have 4 wires a plug with a internal jumper is required pm me with a phone and ill help if this doesnt make sense

OK back up and check the connections from the trolling motor wires. Connect both reds to the black with red stripe and both blacks to the black. Then do the same at the batterys. Both reds to the positive of one battery and both blacks to the negetive on the other battery with jumper between batterys. Just be shure to have a 50 or 60 amp breaker on the positive connection at the battery.
