I came across 2 brand new spools of line in my closet that were put in a box about 3 years ago.

One is Seaguar CarbonPro 100% fluoro 20lb test. The other is Trilene XL 12lb test.

Does line degrade sitting around in the dark in a box or is it only when it sits on a reel and is exposed to the sun?

I would think if the closet they were kept in was inside the house and heated/cooled you would be ok.

Tie a couple of knots and test it out. See if it breaks.

Roomm temp and never exposed to UV light. Might come close to what you buy off the shelf in some stores. Use it.

I think you should send it to me to test and I'll let you know!

just go buy some new line, toss the old stuff in the trash (or send it to one of these guys), and you won't be second guessing your line strength when you set the hook on that double digit toad

You can kill a fly with a sledgehammer,
But do you really need to son???

I wouldn't think twice. Have you seen the stock market and the cost of good fishing line?

Thanks guys! And yes, the cost of line is the reason I was asking! I laid out $20 for LFT fluorohybrid, which was great line BTW, but I got hung up on 3 super long casts and broke off each time (rocks) in one trip so I didn't get to enjoy it for very long. Needless to say I changed tactics that day smile

I have bought line that was junk from the store. Tie a over hand knot in it and pull if it snaps it's trash.
