Phil Shook dealt with this topic in his book Fly Fishers Guide to Texas
There are plenty of fish...and gators

I would try it if I were still living in Houston. Infact, next time I'm down visiting, I may check it out.

I drove out there a few months ago just to take a look. One guy was out there in a small bass boat, poking around. It's SO grown over from the bank out to approx. 20-30ft. out, I went home. Tried at both ends, you would need a boat. Those so called "fishing piers" are so old, and rotted, I was literally afraid of falling through, many railings are loose, or missing. Pretty disgusting, looks like it MAY have been a good lake, like 20 yrs. ago. Never wasting gas to go there again.

I should be more clear, I go down there for medical checkups, often with spare time on my hands, I havent fished Lake Houston , I used to fish the San jacinto River above & below the lake back in the 80's & did pretty good at times.

wow, that sucks... sheldon was pretty neat 20 yrs ago, have you looked down stream of Lake Houston on the San Jacinto ? a few ponds around town ? buffalo bayou & braes abayou (braes is intriguing to me, a concrete ditch with grass carp (white manure, I mean amur) in it. Conroe has a little bank access, and the there is the coast.. good luck

My grandmother/father used to take my dad and uncle fishing at Sheldon reservoir all the time. Probably not long after it was built/impounded and then stocked. My grandfather used to fish from a homemade innertube rig and could launch from the shoreline no problem. I guess that was 50 or so years ago. That place could probably be turned into a great little fishing lake again with some attention from TPWD and the COE.
