If your a big dude, you want a motor, and you have $2k to spend why not just get a jon boat. You ought to be able to get a 10-12' jon boat, trolling motor, and battery for that much money. It be a lot more stable and faster than a yak and could go just about any where a big kayak could.
You can even find used 14' boats with 10hp motors for that much money.

All that is true, and speaking from experience a 10-12' jon boat isn't the most stable craft around unless it's one of those wide as it is long ones, and at least 14 or more feet long.
They are noisy, catch the wind, and you are top heavy which leads to being unstable, and just compound that by adding another person.
They don't track worth a darn with a trolling motor, and a gas motor on a small craft can be more trouble than they are worth, unless you buy new, and then you just out priced yourself trying to stay in the price range of a good yak.
Throw in having to haul it around on a trailer and look for a boat launch, and buy tags for the trailer, and the practicallity part of it leans toward the kayak.
That said, it's more about personal preference, and each has it's place!

All that is true, and speaking from experience a 10-12' jon boat isn't the most ... Plus - if you got a jon b and not a yak it'd be "so long" from the boys at the TFF Kayak Forum, which is a GREAT FORUM ! We'd throw you a 'later alligator" or maybe a " Oh look at the time " to your next 'caught a cat in a JB post" maybe a rude old " and dont let the door hit you in the a** on the way out.." tough crowd huh ! Hey - this was just a good old boys heads up, AF 9, this was just a friendly warning....

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

No worries Steve I have been down the JB rout before and dont wanna go back. Right now I have a bass boat and im an avid bass and tournament angler. My interest in a yak is primarily for the coast. I want something sleek, silent and easy to handle on my own. A jb wont and never will fit into any of those categories.Especially one without a trailer such as the one I had.
Jimbo everything you said about a jb is true. Especially ones with gas motors....I dont need another one of those to tend too, ones enough.
Flysouth that budget was for everything I would need not just the boat. And im leaning more toward the $1500 mark versus the $2000 if possible. But thanks for the opinion.
Thanks everyone for the advice and keep it coming if you have more. I plan to demo at least a few of these suggestions on the next "demo day". Im still saving extra funds now and plan to buy in the "off season". I will have to make a trip to the coast with a few of yall once I get it all set up and im comfortable on the water with it.
