Anyone ever fished the island? Planning a possible beach trip end of July. Can't go back to Crystal Beach this summer so we're looking east.

Any opinions or sugggestions?

I used to live in that area and have fished DI many times. Good public access on both ends. The east end offers jetty fishing around the deeper and swift moving ship channel. Do not attempt to wade fish that area....very dangerous and folks do drown there. Public pier about a half mile west of the main road onto the island. Then there is pretty good surf fishing on the far west end where the island is barely 300yds wide. In other words, fish the gulf side or walk a few hundred yards and you are fishing on the Mississippi Sound side of the island. My recommendation is to rent a kayak from the bait shop at the foot of the Dauphin Island bridge, and then paddle the shallow flats around the bridge and the Mississippi Sound side on the west end. Good speckled trout fishing and flounder most any time. Decent redfish when they're running.

There are some oyster beds on the backside of the island that hold big trout early in the morning. Good topwater action.
