I have a family trip planned on San Luis Pass the last week in july and was needing some pointers on how and where to fish from. I am from dallas area and have only fished salt water from a boat twice but this time I will not be able to use a boat. I was hoping to learn how to fish from the shore. I don't know what to use or where to use it. Any help would be really appreciated!! My pole that I was planning on taking is just a 6'6 med/heavy action pole with shimano curado reel, will this be okay to use?

That set up will be fine. Thats normally all I fish with out ther besides the ole iron horse Abu Garcia's. What do you want to catch is the ???? Trout, Reds, Blacks, Flounder? Lets start with some basics. Green water is the best place to fish. SLP on a hard incomming tide is great fishing at times. From the shore there aren't really all that many spots to fish unless you are at the county park. There are a few lights out there that are really productive.

You can't go wrong fishing New Penny colored Gulp under a popping cork. Texas Tackle Factory Bull minnows or shad type baits on a jig head. Red shad, plum/chart., pumpkin/chart., Red flash (glitter red top, white glitter belly) one of my favs, Red/white tail, morning glory.

Live mullet, live shrimp on a carolina style rig with a strong leader.

You can surf fish those lures, The bite in the surf should be on early in the morning and late evening. Super Spooks in various colors work, Bone, chrome with blue back, silver chartruse skitterwalk and pink. Just wade out to where you are comfortable and start fishing. Watch out for the current and do the stingray shuffle.

If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

In a world of compromise.....Some don't.

Do you need to wade out very far to get out to where the fish are? I have no idea about surf fishing! I would like to catch trout but would be happy just catching, if you know what I mean!

Also do you have any good recommendations on where to get bait and tackle in the area or on the way down there?
