Planning a trip down the the OTHER Port A (Port Arthur) at the end of May. I was thinking fishing the Sabine pass on one day and Keith lake along HWY 87 as well.
Does anyone have any idea what is hitting during that time? Baits i'm planning on using are piggies, whiting, mullet.
Really want to target Reds and sharks.

Sabine is dirty at the moment after all the wind and rain the past few weeks, but by the end of the month both the lake and channel should clear up (so long as we can avoid another monsoon), and the jetties will be turning on.
If you're fishing the pass, look for sharp dropoffs off the points of shallow flats - in the heat of the summer these can be fish magnets (the LNG plant is one such example). Early in the morning work the shallow banks with topwaters and popping corks, and when the fish go deep in the heat of the day work the ledges and switch to plastics and/or live bait. Finger mullet/small croaker for slot sized trout and reds, larger baits for bull reds, drum, and sharks.
Speaking of the latter, if I had to pick one place for sharks in Sabine it would be the jetties. I've had several encounters with large bulls and blacktips this time of year, as they occassionally eat the trout off my lines as I'm cranking them in off the rocks. The washout at the end of each jetty is a natural hotspot for bull reds/drum and sharks are no exception. Cut bait is good, but a fresh bleeding bait is all the better. Bring some shrimp along with you and fish the rocks, and stock up on sand trout, ladyfish, etc.
I can't really comment on Keith Lake as I haven't fished it much, but be sure to mind the tides - it is VERY shallow in some places and you do not want to get stuck in there on low tide. It is great for redfish, however, but perhaps someone else here would be better informed to give you the details.
Good luck to you and remember to check up on the latest reports before your trip.

Troutfisch,
Thanks for the info. I've fished jetties before and will prob stick to your plans. I've had great luck fishing port aranas jetties.
In ref to the jetties you speak of is it anyone of these? Jetty Road Texas Point NWR UTC025Address:‎ Which looks like it points directly to the gulf
OR
Jetty fishing at Pleasure Island Marina with is actually in sabine lake? Looks like this jettie encloses on a marina, which side is better to fish?

Are you fishing the entrance of Texas Bayou or further into the bayou? It has been slow out there for me the past couple of weeks. There must have been 25 boats Friday morning in Lighthouse Cove. Good luck in the morning.

Fishing from 18ft camo jon boat. I usually put in there at Texas Bayou. Fished Thursday morning and caught a nice limit of Reds on finger mullet. Later that afternoon I ran up to Keith Lake and the crabbing was pretty good.

Is nighttime fishing good here? Do people bring lights and set them up on the bridge or is that not allowed?
