I heard from some of the old timers down there rollover is called rollover because in the rum running days there was a check point further up going into the channel so the ships would drop off the barrels of rum or whatever when the tide was coming in and the barrels would roll over through the cut thus the name could be true sounds good anyway

Pretty much heard the same story, except that it was the narrowest point of the peninsula and they rolled the barrels across by hand.

If it was already there, and was NOT man made, then it is off limits.
Supposedly, there are maps from the 1800's that show there was a waterway from the bay to the gulf, right where Rollover Pass is now located.

I heard the same thing today while I was fishing at the pass..I caught a red and they ame over and started talking about closing the pass..The lady I was talking to graduated from High Island In 1960 and grew up on the beach her whole life! She told me back in the day there was a little ditch that ran from the bay to the gulf! Not man made! So I would say this whole deal about closing the pass is a done deal!

PS..Got 1-22inch red,1-24 inch red,and a 18 inch speck in 2 hours..

Hey, Rick.........did you catch these fish at RP. If so, hows the water clarity level and are they done dredging the pass. And hows it looking there as far as debri removal and the bulldozen. Is there any good wade fishing on the bay sied lately? I sure do miss the wading on the bay side of the pass. Thank you in advance!!!

Yes Sir! RP has ben kinda hit and miss! I fished today also and got 4 speck and 3 flounder..{PICS SOON}..The water was alot better today than it has been..That north wind helped out ALOT! Tomorrow is goin to be a great day at the pass if this wind stays like it was today..

I think the dredging is done but dont take my word on that!

Havent seen to many people wade fishing on the bay side due to there being to much boat traffic in the bay..They have a tug that runs up into the bay side of RP..

Hey Thanks to all the loyal fishin people who still come to Rollover to fish we really need to get the word out about Not closing the pass.We need every voice to speak up for one of the great places to fish if they fill in the pass the Bolivar will not have the people come here to fish. It will hurt the one things we need to help build our community back. Not sure if anyone cares but the Gilchrist Community Association is having a meeting June 1st 6:00pm at First Baptist Church in High Island in regards to saving Rollover Pass.We would appreciate any Help from anyone. (Oprah,Obama,Ellen will even take Brad Pitt)OH thats right this is Texas and it wasn't Katrina, yeah it was Ike and Tina wasn't even here)

You know, I am about sick and tired of our government (again!).My Dad and I used to go to Roll Over every weekend when I was a kid (50 years ago). We caught specs, flounder, redfish etc. We would throw back croakers as trash fish. Some of the best times of my life were spent there. Now our government wants to close it. When you think of all the tax dollars wasted by our precious goverment, this makes me sick. They should be hell bent on improving Roll Over. Lets dredge it out and make it what it used to be!!!! Call your congressman right now!!!!! By the way, my Dad is still kicking at 88 and I know he would love to catch just one more spec. All you guys and gals from South Park High, join me on this!!!

After the tide change i have no more bite,so i start to drive home in Houston.

Rollover Pass is NOT done in yet! The fact of the matter, is that there is legislation in Austin to close or modify the Pass if studies prove that RP is the cause of beach erosion in the area. However, if you have been fishing that area for the past several years, it is very plain to see that Hwy 87 going to Sabine Pass has eroded WITHOUT the help of Rollover Pass! Also, marine biologists have already stated that closing the Pass will kill several fish hatcheries in East Bay including grouper. In addition, not having the salinity in the bay will cause the vegetation to die off and the water to heat up producing brown and red tide which is a major health concern to the very young and the elderly. These studies have already been done and have been introduced to legislation. We'll see what they decide to do with this information. Furthermore, if the peninsula produced the kind of revenue that Galveston did, maybe we would warrant our local government to find ways to protect Bolivar peninsula as much as they have chosen to protect Galveston with the sea wall and the north and south jetties for all of these years!!! BTW, the Pass is NOT filled in yet and according to officials, will not be filled in until it has been decided to close the Pass which could be several years from now.

Any "NEW" or latest fishing reports from Rollover Pass? I heard that the night fishing has goton better lately. IF so, what have they been biting on such as plastics or live bait? And, anyone been or had any luck wade fishing on the bay side of the pass?
