Minnows are a waste of money. Don't really need "nibbles" either.

Who won CAT's classic last year? Ask him what he used? And it wasn't RTs. And he wasn't the only 'pro' that did the same. Even an ole sea dog with shiny sponsor wear we all love did.
I think the Dougee fella is on point. There a time & place for each.

I think the Dougee fella is on point. There a time & place for each. There is a time and place for minnows. If I'm trolling, I'm using minnows. I've just never had the success on jigs trolling that I have had with minnows. CC is probably the only lake that I would have done that on. If the Classic had been Lavon, RR or RC, it would have been won on RT's in the timber. I had a plan on CC, I knew the lake was full of 1 1/4# Crappie. I knew you needed at least 4-5 better fish to win. I could catch 30-40 keepers a day using one pole and a jig around the B/P's. Trolling I could catch 100-200 keepers a day. It is easier to find 5 good fish out of 200 than 5 out of 40. There was no "big fish" pattern on that lake. Now you go to lake with timber and fish with minnows, I think you get beat most of the time. You can't fish them fast enough and can't cover as many trees as you can jigs IMO. I'm not above fishing minnows if that is what I think it will take to win or put customers on fish. If you fish tournaments you better be able to do it all if you want to compete. Paul and I was never afraid of anyone, if we had to fish a bridge, shoot a dock, troll or fish timber we felt like we could do it better than most and have a chance. Confidence goes a long way. Most people are reluctant to give up minnows for jigs because they lack confidence. When your not fishing with confidence, your not concentrating on the task at hand. I expect a bite on every drop and try not to be surprised when one bites. That concentration/confidence is hard to keep up on the slow days but I feel like that is what separates a lot of fisherman.

There is so much valuable info in this reply! I think you are 100% on the confidence issue! Once again Jerry thanks for sharing the knowledge! There is so much info here!

How to wean yourself off of minnows?
Stop swallowing them whole and start chewing them up thoroughly before you swallow (most folks dont like them as much that way), Yep had a man and his wife out the other day catching them on minnows (hooked thru their mouth - really straight up thru the lower jaw and right between their eyes - not in the lips - they pull off to easy there - fished just like a jig) and when we ran out of minnows.... He asked - can we catch them on Jigs also - so we did - he was shocked at that (pretty much just as good), - he might be a jig guy from now on,

Catching them with jigs switched me over. My wife likes the minnows because she likes to sit back and watch for a bite. I am currently trying to get off of crickets when catching bluegill, but not having any luck there.

You know there is a time that I fish only with Jigs and that is when I wade fish it is just to big a pain to carrier that minnow bucket and believe me I try once. When wade fishing you just need to hit them on the head with it and they will hit it so hard that it scare the hell out of me. But I like it. You know that it is true that buying minnows is a waste of good money because when I was a kid my dad didn't buy minnows and I sure didn't have the money to waste. But we always had minnows to fish with and that is because my dad made up minnow traps for us, we lived on Lake Granbury and we would take one gallon glass jars and the screw on canning ring a small piece of screen wire make into a cone and place in the mouth of the jar with some rabbit food inside and then place the open end to the deep part of the lake and minnows would swim in to eat and get trap and there you have it free bait. Hmmm I guess I got lazy.

I am currently trying to get off of crickets when catching bluegill, but not having any luck there. Try a 1/64th oz jig tipped with a tiny piece of mealworm or red wiggler. I catch twice as many sunfish on a jig, but only if it's tipped with a little bait.

Best way to get to be a good jig fisherman is to leave everything else at home and go with someone who knows how to jig fish.
Once you get a bit of confidence in jigs you will not fish with anything else.
As far as the nibbles go, the people that like them wouldn't fish any other way, the ones (like me) that don't like them wouldn't use them at all. Yesterday was a good example, my partner and I were outfishing ***** about four to one. ***** tried adding nibbles to his jigs and we outfished him four to one. Didn't help at all. That has been my experience for years.
