?1: The 230 grain Bluegill rod by Sage, what weight is it?

?2: Will a 1650 Series Sage reel(6WT) match well to this rod with the line being heavier than normal?

?3: Is this really a bluegill fly rod or is it kind of heavy?

I find this kind of advertising interesting from a marketing point of view. You're too stupid to pick the approapriate rod weight for yourself so we will name this rod a type of fish and market it. I, like you want more exact details. There is a huge difference between chasing 6 or 7" brim vs ones that are 12" if you are fortunate enough to have access to those fish. I want to choose a 2 wt or a 5 wt and have more info.

When you asked the question was it really heavy, my first thought was "Absolutely the price is too heavy for that rod".

In all seriousness, call Sage and see if you can pick their brain, not only on true weight but also action type. I think that these are slower action rods and you should know what you are getting into. Many prefer a slower rod and that is cool, just know what you are buying. Tell us what they really tell you.

Called them b4 I posted here(Lunch Time). Waiting for a return call from Sage.

You're absolutly right, as it is an odd way to advertise.

Heavy as in unbalanced reel to rod (HaHa).

According to the ASA standard, a nine weight, first choice of bluegillers everywhere.

Okay, so surely the name "Bluegill" must suggest only that this rod is somewhat lighter than the other two models in the series, right, and not that it is intended for catching four ounce fish?

Doesn't everyone use a bream rod that doesn't let you know you've caught one until your backcast feels a little off? Alternatively, as the line whips past your head, you may think "I don't remember that bluegill fly looking that big, or that much like a bluegill" smile

I think you're looking at a prime example of the marketing team in action. I'll bet the sales reps just love explaining that over and over again. smile

I lightly considered buying this rod but after some research and some reviews, I think I will go with something else. My main reason is it's to much rod for gills. Maybe something more for small bass, sandies, etc. Maybe they should have named it The Redhorse or The Sucker. I can hear the punch-lines brewing.

I've talked about this a million times before, but I really like my little Cabelas Three Forks/Prestige Plus combo in a 3wt for bream. It's hard to be from a cost effectiveness standpoint and I've had a lot of fun with it.

Is it the Berkley Stinger, if so I have that same old rod in a 5/6. It's not the fastest action flyrod (it is over 25 yrs old). Intersting that someone else still has one.

As for a decent bluegill rod, I love my TFO 2wt. I need to get more hours on it grin

I like this guy. cheers

I have 3 of the Plateau rods and for "cheap" rods they work for me. I have this in a 9', 5 wt; 9', 6 wt and a 10', 7 wt.

I have two of the Lamson Radius reels reels that I found on closeout for less money than the new Konic at the time and never looked back. I also really like the Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock for a very reasonably priced reel.

On rods, I buy rods at a price point. I buy last years models or closeout rods "cheap". The last Plateau I spent a whopping $30 on the 6 wt. The most expensive rod I throw, which I have 3 of are the St. Croix Legend Elites. They list at a $520 lr $530, I bought 3 at once for $169 each. I frequent places like Bob Marriotts, Madison River, Sierra Trading Post and Ebay. I like expensive equipment, I just refuse to pay retail. If someone wants to pay the R&D department and be an early adopter of the latest hottest, cool with me, but I just realize that I am a cheap bastid and I move on with a smile on my face and a little more jingle in my pocket.

If you want a bluegill rod, get a 1wt or a 2wt. I don't know if Cabela's still makes their FT rods (full flex), but I built one that's a 2wt 6.5'. It is BY FAR my favorite bluegill/trout rod EVER.

for $4.89 you can get one of those three section bamboo poles and tie a fly onto the end... used to slay 'em like that back home in the summertime just by dabbling the fly on the surface!
