Is tipping your guide something that is customary/expected?
If so, how much is a fair amount? I have a trip comming up and am lost on this point. Any help is appreciated.

I used to guide some in Louisiana for reds and specks. Tips are an awesome thing to get as a guide...its NOT expected but its like telling them they went above and beyond. So, if the guide goes above and beyond your expectations show them that you thank their effort and tip them. This way they will always treat you the same every time you come back. Amount depends on you. I have gotten a 100 bucks from a few guys on a $500 trip. But, I also have gotten $20 and felt the same about it. If the guide has a fishing heart they will say and feel "thanks" for any amount.
Just remember that if the guide is not the owner of the guide service then your particular guide is splitting that total money to the owner. So, your tip goes straight to YOUR gudies pocket not the owner.
I would say 20% of the total spent and your good. If the guide didn't do their job don't tip them and your fine too.
Also, a good guide will never fish with you unless you ask them to. I would never even throw a bait out unless I was asked to.
Good guides are hard to find so pay the money and figure out if the guide was worth it if not go to one that is.
What palce are you getting a guide?
Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit!! It is when pirates count their booty that they become mere thieves. ARRRRRR....

I would hate to know how many guide trips I've booked over the years, but its certainly in the many hundreds. I have NEVER not tipped a guide, but I'm also known to be an over achiever when it comes to tipping LOL!
I always tip 20% of the guide fee. More if they've worked their tail off for me, regardless of catch. I have always believed that a guide is for a day of instruction. They can put you on the fish but they can't make them bite nor can they get them in the boat for you. I ask questions and learn as much as I can.
Tipping is not necessary, but if you're going to be a returning customer its a good idea to establish a relationship with your guide. A tip is a great way to end a guides long day of hard work.

15% to 20% if they did a good job.
Guides are easy to find. Really good guides not so much.
