I post this every so often, and try to remind people to update their coverage on their boat trailers.

Most insurance companies have a bad habit of just selecting a convenient round number of $1000 or $1500 when insuring a trailer. That is completely wrong in most cases. Most trailers now days are worth much, much more.

If you have a 20 foot bass boat, most trailers are over $4500! I've seen some lately that are over $5200-5400!

So make sure you call your agent just to make sure about the amount of coverage on your policy is significant enough to cover your trailer in the event of an accident.

Is that an endorsement on your truck coverage? Never even thought about that. Thanks for the tip.

No, it is on the boat policy itself. The Texas Auto Policy will not extend to the trailer itself. The only time there is coverage for a trailer under an auto policy is in the event the trailer does damage to someone's property or it is hit by an un/underinsured motorist and the tow vehicle pulling the trailer has un/underinsured motorist coverage on it.

What I was referring to as trailer coverage, was under the boat policy itself.

I thought the boat and trailer would be insured together under the boat policy. This is my first boat, so I have no idea how this works. I use State Farm now, just switched over to them on my vehicle and house insurance.

Maybe agents structure these deals different for different customers...but I can tell you that I just had a claim that involved my boat and my trailer...had to pay deductable on both as they where on two separate policies...policy #1 = boat/motor policy #2 trailer.

Carrier - State Farm.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Every company does it differently. So make sure you check what you actually have. Don't go by what someone else says they have. Some times even the same company offers two or three different types of policies!

Totally agree...you can not understand your coverage too well. It may seem like a little thing now...but trust me (had a significant claim), you want to consider your boat, your trailer and your motor and think about the options...if you have a newer boat, insure it for what you have in it....my two cents and it did work for me.

Thanks guys. I will see what they have for me to choose from when I finally get the boat painted.

Just got another boat delivered on top of a flat bed wrecker. Trailer is totaled and the insurance agent did it again. Put $1000 on the trailer and the replacement trailer is $2680. Customer has to come up with $1680 out of pocket to get another trailer. This was on a replacement policy, but the limit of the policy was only $1000. That doesn't even include his $250 deductible for the trailer. So in reality add $250 to the $1680!

Oh man that is rough. I am afraid of what they will do to me once I get insurance on my boat. I need to know that it will be taken care of...and not pay a fortune. I don't even know what my boat is worth yet. I am going to ask a couple of people once I get it finished. Then I will have some idea of the value. I want a replacement insurance policy...but after reading this, I don't know what to do.

I just wrinkled the back right side of my trailer on Saturday. I know I have a $100 deductible and my insurance will only cover up to $1000 on the trailer but I have no idea where to take it to get some estimates. Anybody have any ideas?
