Trolling? Sucks. That is my thinking.
Find fish - get on top of them and catch them. +1000

Helpet or a Jet Diver. We were at Lewisville on Friday and the waves were 3.5' and more -- I told the guy I was with that we have 2 choices = anchor down with bait or troll -- he told me to come up with a better plan

A hellbender and petspoon is the best combination to locate fish. Sonar always work but while you are reading the graph if you want to troll for fish thats the best way I know. If you have kids in the boat you can't beat it. We have never gone to a lake that it didn't work. Trolling only sucks to someone cause they don't want you to do it.
Never troll through a school or get to close to a slabber cause then you just made them mad about their badluck and you made yourself them their excuse for not catching fish while you are. It's to easy to show em but it's real hard to get that dead stick out of their hands. They somehow pull up on the fish with their motor running and believe you scared a fish off that was 20 foot deep by trolling. They do catch bigger fish but you will catch more and sometimes a bigger one will hit you trolling.
This is probably the funniest post I have ever read. Good one, but seriously, you're joking right? Right? I mean, you're saying that you will catch more sand bass trolling than slabbing? Trolling is a good way to catch fish and does have a time and place, but it does not catch more fish than slabs. And, you don't need a thousand dollars worth of electronics, or spend twice the amount for fuel, to catch fish. However, I do believe fastguy said that the only way to catch sand bass at Cedar Creek is to troll for them

Nitro is right! A man can catch 2 to 3 fish sabing, when a some one trolling is realing in setting lines out, turning the boat around to get back on the fish. Late summer is when scater out. Thats the only time you need to troll to catch fish. Right now they are buched up and feeding. GO GREEN AND STOP THE BOAT TO CATCH MORE FISH. LOL!

Why troll when you can drop anything straight down and catch a fish. So no I'am not joking about catching more fish trolling when they are scattered off the humps. And yes when they are there slabbing or live bait or a beer can top will catch more than trolling. I'am quit certain just by reading fastguys posts that if the only thing you could use to catch a fish on a certain day was trolling he would be home getting ready for the next day.
I surely feel alot more like I do now than I did awhile ago. WELLGOOD

I'll tell you what, you pick a day and the lake (has to have sand bass) and we'll make a hefty wager on who catches more fish, over a two hour period. You troll whatever you want to troll and I will use only slabs. I will bring a friend that will ride with you and you bring a friend that will ride with me and they will count the fish we catch. I am dead serious and the lake can be your home lake, if you prefer. It will be a fun wager and a good way for me to pay for my new graph. You on? BTW, the fastguy comment was a joke. George is a master hybrid hunter and sand bass only get in his way

No. I do not want a wager on such a silly thing. Somehow you think I'am saying trolling always catches more fish and I never said that. I only meant it in the way that when you are sitting on the hump and can't catch one on every cast and the trollers are pulling them in it is somehow the trollers fault the fish are not stacked up waiting on a slab. Which this thought of mine only applies when I cant catch em slabbin I might as well troll em. As I said earlier there is no reason to troll a boat show on the water where every boat is pulling them in.

There is a time and a place for trolling, the time was yesterday and the place is the middle of Tawakoni.

I fish Lake Livingston for whites and we troll with the wives on the boat, because they are like kids get bored in five minutes. I would rather find a school and anchor up and catch, but with wives on the boat you got to do what you got to do. When trolling we use pet spoons with a jet diver when fishing schooling fish anchored up we use rattle traps and rooster tails, catch limits all the time both ways...

Yes-- except when they are stacked up in one spot. My best has been 22 lb striper on Tawakoni and 14 lb hybrid in Ray Hubbard -- both trolling the hump areas during summer.
Usually using white or chartrause Shassy Shads, and or shallow running Rapala's using downriggers to position the lure at the correct depth.
Also caught several with BIG surface bait early early morning.

Seems to me a good carpenter has more than one tool in his box. High winds, or they WILL NOT hit a slab, I'll change over to a horizontal presentation for a while (troll). If they're schooling, I'll chunk-n-wind or break out the fly rod. (SuperBlast) My personal favorite method, however is to slab for the lil' fatties When I do troll I'll use a heavy Humdinger or my super producer The Hell Pet replacing the spoon with one of my Tag-A-Longs. Hang on! Have fun and use more than one tool!
He leadeth me beside still waters.

Like many have said, trolling is a good way to locate fish. Once I have located a school by trolling I will toss the slab. To say that trolling is a bad fishing tactic is nonsense. You still have to decide where you troll, what speed, and what depth. It's not like some mindless idiot can just throw out a hellpet and empty the lake.

hey texas buff has been following me- i am a mindless idiot who spends a lot of time trolling- not because I want to but because I have a lot of folks who come to tawakoni that fish twice a year and have never used anything more than a zebco. i untangle enough backlashes from them just trying to let line out to troll, I think i would leave a few of em out there if they were trying to cast a bait caster
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
