This I saw in Field and Stream the other day. Comes from Guide Jim Morris at T-bend. It is said to be used when the crappie are docile. Put a cup of dry rice and a few rocks into a small paper bag. Take the bag to your brushpile and tie it on a string. Lower bag thru the brushpile to the bottom and leave it there for a few minutes with string attached. Meanwhile the rice will start to absorb the water. After a few, give the string a jerk to tear the bag open. The rice will slowly drift up theu the water column and the brushpile. The rice will get the bait excited and in turn get the crappie excited to improve your catch. Said the rice looks like maggots to the bait-fish.
Have you done this? and what happened?

I understand, in europe, maggots are the bait of choice there. Let's just use the real deal in this case. Maggots get the bait excited, Crappie get excited over the bait, I get excited about handling all those maggots, and blow chunks for even more chum on the water. Everybody wins.

Maggots used to be THE panfish bait of choice. I stumbled on an old fishing book that not only told you how to raise your own stock of maggots but also how to dye em pretty colors for more fish catching appeal.

WOW, this is the first time I have heard of the rice or the maggots for crappies. The rice part I can do, but as far as the maggots goes, no way that I go near it. Thank you for sharing !!!!!!!

Just hang some roadkill in a tree around your favorite spot. Free supply of REAL maggots. I would like to see BigMack fishing in that spot!
