I have a 2001 ZX 225 and recently my on board charger indicator light started going haywire. It is a 3 bank charger and one of the lights would be red and blinking( on the indicator) took boat apart(ha ha0, took the charger out, and the charger lights show green when plugged to the batteries as if charging but one of the batteries was dead. Plugged another charger on the battery and it charged up fine ( not a batery problem), indicator lights went to green and worked fine. Question -- How can I test this unit to see if it is acually sending out a charge or it is actually done for? Rubbed the + and - terminals to see if they sparked and nothing, even though the lights showed green on the charger. Put a "meter" to it and no reading. Sorry for the lenghty post but to replace the unit it 350 to 450 dollars. Thanks

So my question is what brand is the charger and how old is it? Did you meter all three banks, and if so did any of the banks register any amps? Sorry it just helps to narrow down the problem. If the charger is old, I have heard of them going bad. If you have power from any of the banks then only one bank is dead. You can take it to a Marine repair shop and they can probably fix it or at least tell you exactly what is wrong with, for a price though. Most places charge around $90.00 an hour for labor, some even charge a diagnostic fee. When you combine those costs it may be cheaper to replace the charger. If you need a 3 bank you should be able to pick up a Minn Kota for around $149.99-$179.99. That is what I had and it worked well. Good luck and I hope this helped.

Mine has the hot wire from each bank fused. Might be that simple.

The unit came with the skeeter boat. I bought the skeeter new in 2001. The brand on the charger is a skeeter brand so it is probably 8 years old. I tested every bank and non registered amps. I figured it is just old and gave out but just wanted to make sure. It still buzzes when plugged in but no amps register on the terminals. The indicator lights on the unit still work when attached to the batteries (batteries are fully charged and the lights are green). I didn't know if the unit will not register amps unless it is attached to a battery. The other 3 bank charger I have is a "guest" on board charger and it registers amps at the terminals and "sparkes when touching the + and - terminals. That unit is a year 2000 model but it is hardly used. I guess I'll use it for now.

It is a dual pro 15 amps per bank, 3 bank charger, Under the passenger seat.
The item about 8 inches from the ring terminal is a fuse. Have to cut shrink tubing to get to it, but this is the possible problem. Same boat same charger.

You probably blew the fuse when you touched the wires. Dont do that again because you then create other problems and it is easy to check it if you will just call me. Because this is a trickle charger you are not able to just lay a meter across it unless you have the proper load on it. I know some tricks you can try.
Need some info first: How old are the batteries? Have you tried to simply move the two leads (should be the two smallest wires)from the battery charge indicater from one battery to another battery? If the flashing bank follows the from battery to another battery this will tell you that it is for sure that charging bank is bad and not the battery or the indicator. The LED does have a PCB in it! I have worked on my Skeeter Duel Pro and I made the mistake of not having the proper load on it when testing it so it looked like it had no out put. Bought another and didnt need it. No need for you to do the same thing. I still think your charger has lost a diode in the bridge rectifier and you are just seeing the output from the charger flash. If so, it is only a matter of time before that bank goes out completely because it is working harder and not putting out a good source of DC........... Call

Unless the leads are hooked to a battery the charger will do nothing, but check the fuse. Messure the voltage on the batteries and see if it is increasing when charger is plugged in.

Update: Measured the output/amps/volts/ current? on a battery I had. It read 12.5 with no charger. Put one bank/terminal at a time( made sure others were not touching together) And remeasured. Battery started moving up to about 14 to 15. 2 of the 3 worked like that and I took it to be that they were working. The one terminal had no output, so I took shrink wrap off and broke epoxy hard wired fuse line and it worked but it charges very slowly and not to the same amount 13/ 13.5. I think bank is goin out so I'm going to invest in a new one next month and keep this one as back up.. Thanks to all for your help. I guess I have to make sure the charger lights match the charge indicator lights, Right?

Sounds like a battery. Chargers either work of they don't. They don't slowly die.
Stress less, relax more. Go fishing.
