Anyone fished there before? I wonder if you need a permit or license to fish without a guide.
Thanks,

I went there about 8 or 9 years ago. Didn't fish but spent about 6 hours underwater, and man there are some nice fish there. Did a shallow dive from shore and saw some really nice tarpon. You might check with a travel agent about the fishing license etc. It is a beautiful Island and good food. Dennis

I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT, I KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS.
NO LICENSE REQUIRED WHEN I WAS THERE LAST.
ON THE MID WESTERN PART OF THE ISLAND THERE ARE A BUNCH OF PONDS (GRAVEL PITS) THAT CONTAINED A LOT OF TARPON. THEY WOULD HIT A JIG PRETTY GOOD. COULDN'T LAND MANY ON THE LIGHT TACKLE THAT I HAD BUT IT WAS FUN TO WATCH THEM JUMP.
YOU CAN CATCH REEF FISH FROM THE SHORE AROUND THE TURTLE FARM OR MOST ANYWHERE FOR THAT MATTER. THERE IS A GREAT LITTLE REEF BEHIND THE CEMETERY FOR SNORKLEING.
GOOD LUCK
ERNEST

Hey I just went this year and even posted some updates on the forum! No license required for tourists!! As you drive throughout the island you will notice some little bar ditches with water in them--these are full of 3-5 pound tarpon--even some bigger ones! I caught a bunch of these little guys on rainbow shad jr. flukes!! Ate them like candy! Throw them right up against the mangroves and watch the water explode!! Also I am not sure exactly where to find it but there is a large gravel pit with some 60+ pound tarpon in there!! There are some good places on the east end to catch cuda and jacks--my bro caught a cuda that went almost 40in! Not bad for 8lb test! In the west bay area, there are some bonefish flats that are supposed to produce some good fish but I never made it up there The south part of the island has some good beaches to fish from and I even hooked up with a 35+lb tarpon from shore! Seven mile beach has quite a few bar jacks and those are always alot of fun! The yacht club is supposed to produce both tarpon and bonefish. I went out and went deep sea fishing with a friend. We managed two small tuna---excellent on the grill!!! He has lived there for quite some time so he knew all about the place! As for tourism--sting ray city is a must! Holding a ray in your hands that has a tip to tip spread of about five feet is quite on experience! If you have any questions on things, I can get you lots of info--email me at: fishntoph_7@hotmail.com Hope this helps! God Bless!! ><{{{">Fish N Toph<"}}}><

Thanks for the replies. If I could take just a handful of tackle, what would you suggest? I'm taking a 6.5' spinning rig. Also, what should I do for a leader?

Hasbeen, you can take rods and reels aboard the plane but not any lures or anything with a hook on it.You have to put hooked items in your checked baggage
say what you mean......mean what you say

Jr Flukes for the tarpon in canals. Jigs are always good for almost anything And take some spoons for the rocks and beaches.

I know there are bonefishing lodges on Little Cayman. I went to the keys last summer and hooked up with plenty of big cudas in front of the hotel on 18" surgical tubing lures. You just cast those things out and reel them in as fast as you can. The faster the better.
