revo,

the best bait on that lake for Reds is live tilapia(3-5"). They can be cast netted fairly easily. We've had good luck on live crawfish as well. Bream also work well.

In my experience, live bait is your best bet on FF. Cut shad, perch, tilapia will work, just not as well. Hope this helps.

I've never been to Fairfield.
Where can you get the tilapia?
Can you cast net the tilapia from the bank?

Yes, you can wade out and net them. Bream probably work just as good

Also note that it is technically illegal to use live tilapia for bait -- you are required by law to gut any tilapia you catch.

I specifically emailed TPWD on this, because it seemed like since they stocked tilapia there, you would not be required to kill them, but they replied that it would be legal to use tilapia as cut bait, but not as live bait, per the regulations. I've not known of anyone to get a ticket for *not* killing tilapia, but you never know... and bream *are* legal to use as live bait.

You will not get a ticket for using tilapia as bait on Lake Fairfield, trust me. Just don't try to take any home with you.

For clarity, don't try to take any Tilapia home with you ALIVE. But take all you want home with you gutted or fully cleaned, the more the better. It is illegal to transport live "exotic" fish.

I have know as many as 270 to be cleaned and bagged by one fisherman in one day. Seen the parks people witness the cleaning of hundreds at other times.
