Now that they have been out for a while would the mechanics on the forum post their opinions regarding
2 stroke vs 4 stroke engines -- pluses and minus of each type and typical annual maintenance on the 4 stroke.
and here's a LOADED QUESTION-- your opinion of the most durable 4 stroke.
Appreciate your response-- boatman1 is looking for another BOAT! as some of you know I had a plain Jane Evinrude 112 hp-- that went over 3000 hours before Tommy at Rockwall Marine had to rebuild the engine-- with LOTS of slow trolling speed hours! We would turn it on at 6:00am-- run to the humps-- and troll for 2-3 hours-- then run to another spot and troll for 2-3 more hours! for up to 12 hours per day.

Honda 4 stoke since the 60s! ?once you drive a four stroke you will quickly make your decision! Quiet, more torque, lot less smoke, don't have to worry bout mix! Or if VRO is working properly! Lot less props with carbs because no residue from oil mix from 2stroke. FUEL ECONOMY!

four stroke ,more weight ,more parts, less performance hp for hp unless you get the mercury verado fuel economy isnt much better than the optimax direct injected motors

My fishing buddy runs a 28 ft Pro Kat catamaran with twin Suzuki 140 four strokes and gets twice the mileage as my boat running a single Mercury 200 EFI. His boat is much larger and heavier too.

I really like the 4 strokes for the quiteness. It really is amazing when you compair it to anyones 2 stroke. I've run yamaha, suzuki, and hondas in different horsepower ranges and to be honest here, I find the throttle response slightly less than what a compromate 2 stroke would be. I do feel that the top end is a little mushy, if that makes sense to you. I really love the trollling aspect. I do not pay attention to fuel, comsumptiom varies with each trip and when it needs fuel, just fill er up. I do relize that you need an oil change yearly, but so does my lawnmower, so what. What I really do not like, they are heavy. In some applications, It would not be a good choise. I.E. A 2 stroke 9.9hp Johnson/Evinrude weights around 58lbs. A 4 stroke 9.9 Honda comes in around 104lbs. You cannot put that motor on a 12ft car topper flatbottom. But where they prevail...Pontoon boats, offshore boats, anywhere that weight and hole-shot is not important/////// just my .02cents...

Thanks everyone for your 2 cents worth--
Except for oil change--- and lower end maintenance-- the 4 strokes seem to be easy to maintain-- am I correct-- or do they require some special piece of equipment to do normal annual maintenance?

I would like more info on the 4 vs 2 stroke as I am tossing around the idea of getting a new rig, I have heard that yami is only going to be making the 4 in the near future, I will be buying a skeeter with a yami of course. Just need to know if I should wait on the 4 or just get the 2 before they are gone. thanks

i disagree that the 4's are that much better, the new dfi engines are quiet powerful and the fuel economy is good, the emisions are low and the hp to weight ratio is better, has anyone asked about how often you have to service a 4 ,what about valve adjustment and timing belts and all the extra internal parts, not to mention the added weight, and as far as oiling , doesnt the 4 have a oil pump , i personally just dont see any advantage in a 4, i can see applications for a 4 but not on high performance bassboats
