Took a two man kayak out of Rochelle's today. I wouldn't say the fishing was on fire, but they were biting. Between two of us we ended up with probably just shy of 20 bass. The ones we actually landed were all below 14", frankly I was happy just to be catching fish. I had one that looked to be around 18-20" that I lost right at my feet, grrr. The wind kept us from fly fishing more than a few casts so we had to break out the spinning gear (which makes me wonder why I am posting in this forum). Anyhow, we tried a bunch of lures and flies but the small white and grey rooster tails seemed to do the trick today. Just thought I would give my word. Are the bass on this section pre or post spawn? I couldn't figure it out. I simply know they aren't on beds right now. I could never figure out a pattern. Oh, and dangit, no carp to be had!

Got it on the wind, it killed my feeble attempt at chunking flies as well.
Glad you got out there and got the paddles and lines in the water!

The ones we caught this weekend were pre-spawn. I cleaned a few, and the females were FULL of eggs. None of their tails were bloody, and we didn't see any beds. The best way to adapt to flyfishing in the wind is to leave your spinning rod at home. Seriously. If you keep after it in the wind, you'll start to learn how to use the wind and how to adapt your position, casting angles, and everything else in order to get the job done in spite of the wind. Living in West Texas, I figure that if I don't flyfish in the wind, then I may as well sell all my fly rods.

My best way to adapt to fly fishing the Brazos in the wind is to pack a seine, an ultra light spin rig w some circle hooks and catch fish at about a 12 - 1 "me to you" ratio
I know, I know , it is kinda rude but ...
Who wants to go ?
Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Woolybugger, I am with you. I don't take anything but fly gear now, and 2 weeks ago had to fish in 20 mph winds on Gilmer. Had a great day, and my son who is a relative beginner adapted well too. When it is the only choice you have, you have to pick between fly fishing or going home. I would rather catch 2 fish on a long rod than 6 on a broom stick.
