I've been hooking into some decent size hybrids 5-7 pounds on Ray Hubbard in shallow water. I usually target blacks but those hybrids have been feeding in the same areas in numbers and it's hard to ignore such an awesome fight.
My question is how often do see huge hybrids 10 + pounds in shallow water less than 5 feet deep? Do most of the big hybrids normally stay deep?

They be where the bait be - shallow or deep. Most people fish them deep and overlook the shallow spots. Look for shore birds gathered up along a shoreline and I'd bet there's a lot of bait in there = hybrids.

Thats why I love this time of year. Shad got to spawn too and when they do that equals Stripers/Hybrids/Sandies in the shallow. They usually spawn along points/etc.

Just my limited experience is the big boys play shallow in the dark or very low light. Once it gets light they slide to just deep enough to feel safe. They got big because they have not let themselves get caught.

thanks for the info guys. I went back this morning and did well. Those fish were still stacked into the same area. Caught lots of fish to 23" up shallow. I don't usually target hybrids so I just needed some tips about the larger fish. I was using big baits and you could feel the smaller fish bumping it but they couldn't get it. Awesome fight. It was an experience cathing those big hybrids and they definately destroyed my baits beyond repair.

Way to go sore-abs. Saturday is looking good weather wise and you can bet we will be shallow.
