Howdy y'all! (practicing my texanglish) I just moved down here from Montana. I'm in the Grapevine area, and was wondering about fishing Denton Creek. I've been fly fishing for trout for the last 8 years, and would love to catch some bass or crappie on my fly rod, but am also planning on getting a good spinning rod setup as well (that's a whole 'nother thread altogether). Anyhow, back to Denton Creek, specifically around 2499, anyone have a bone they'd like to throw to help a newcomer out?

I have not heard of anyone fishing Denton Creek around 2499, which is basically right at the Lake Grapevine Dam. You may have better luck on Denton Creek over by Hwy 377. Also check out the bank fishing section, and someone over there may be able to provide more help. Welcome to Texas!

thanks for the welcome, Hook'em! I'm gonna give it a shot at 2499 and see what happens, and I'll let you guys know. When I get to know the area a little better, I'll head up to 377. How's the Trinity? Anywhere in particular I should start nosing around?

welcome to texas, fly fishing in texas is not huge. however i have a buddy who did nothing else but fly fish with me. i have fished most of the areas you can get to with out a boat on denton creek, and there is not a lot to be caught, well we did not have a lot of luck. The trinity is dirty, if i were you, i would head north and fish the red river, or head down and fish the most southern portion of the trinity. I nother thing me and my buddy did was buy a float tube, and that way we could fish some of the bigger boddies of water, and wer not limited to the shore lines. but then there is the whole snake and gator population. anywyas, i hope this helps. pm me and i will hook you up with my buddies contact info, he accually lives in montana now! so let me know he could tell you more

Romo please if you read this, can you step it up? My cowboys need another title. Oh and Kenseth if you happen to read this, open a can of man and start winning some races...if you need to borrow a can of man I got extra! That will be all.

This is just a thought but you may want to go Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine, and ask some of the guys in the Fly Fishing department if they have any tips. They may not want to give up there spots, but may offer a little help.

Welcome to the TFF.

TRW, I split my time between CO and TX. I, too, fly fish for trout regularly. To tell you the truth, I would much rather Bass fish. The feeling of being on a boat, or bank, and feeling that "bump" and setting the hook is one you will remember and long for.

Forget the spinning reel, get a bait caster and learn it. Just like fly casting, there is a learning curve, but the rewards are worth it.

I love being on a high mountain stream all by myself in the Rockies, it is a feeling like no other. But, give me my druthers, I would take a bass boat on a TX lake, at evening, with the water smooth as glass, the sun going down and flipping to a submerged log and feeling that "tap".

You will miss the mountains, but the fishing is phenomenal, no matter what species you decide to tackle.

TX is one he77 of a place and the people are like no other in the US!

Here's to your new digs! cheers

Thanks guys! So far, I've got no complaints about Texas (but it aint summer yet), and I'm happy to be here. It's hard for me to imagine a good looking creek like Denton not having a decent population of fish in it. Maybe that's just the Montanan in me. Do crappie hang out in creeks? Or any other panfish? The main reason why I'm focusing on Denton Creek at the moment is that's where my apartment is, and it's the clearest looking water I've seen so far. I'll be sure to stop in to Bass Pro, since it's just a couple minutes away. I've got a topwater frog streamer that I used for cutthroat and browns up in MT as well as some mouse streamers that I can't wait to try out on bass.
